WHAT IS A STAYER IN HORSE RACING?

A stayer is a classic horse racing term used to describe horses that are capable of running over long distances. A word stayer is term in English language that is used to describe someone or something as durable. Like the stayer in horse racing, horses are likely to be durable and have plenty of energy. The staying horse is part of British Racing’s heritage, however over the past 20 years a shift in commercial breeding patterns and reactive changes to the racing program have contributed to a decline in the staying division. Grand National winners have to be stayers, otherwise they wouldn’t have the energy to get around Aintree’s 30-jump course.

The typical traits of stayer is having a well angled and long pasterns. long cannons with a short forearm and leggy overall. These shaped muscles are usually flexible and capable of working for extended periods, ideally suited as distances increase. Its neck may be long, thin and set high. Its head may be long and thin. The well sloped shoulder can lead to a shorter back, this can enable good reach forward and lift, as it keeps the center of gravity (or weight) from going to far forward, which again aids stride length. Its shoulder blade may also have some good length, but the stayer will often be vertically shallow as far as its girth goes. All of this traits allow for extra scope with the stayers stride, leading to a potentially longer striding horse.

These races all run for longer than two miles and include the Ascot Gold Cup, the St Leger Stakes, the Belmont Stakes in the US and Australia’s Melbourne Cup. The 경마사이트 Cheltenham Festival also stages plenty of long-distance runs and subsequently attracts some of the world’s best stayers.
