"The race was great fun for explorers of all ages.  There was a brilliant mix of clues which stretched our brains and our legs.  The design of the game brought some chaotic and hilarious moments, especially towards the end when our attempts to earn points became increasingly desperate!  A highly recommended way to spend your afternoon in London!"

WHAT IS RACE AROUND LONDON?

Race Around London is an orienteering treasure hunt challenge based loosely on the "Race Across The World" TV show. Teams plot a route around London to collect as many points as possible within the time allowed.

With only a starting point, an ending point , a deadline and a menu of tasks to choose from, picking the right tasks and plotting an efficient route are essential if you are to win the day!

At the end of the race, the teams meet to compare their successes and failures, swap stories, tally up their points and receive their prizes. This is also a good time to eat any goodies that have been bought en route!

DO I NEED TO RUN?

No!!!

In fact, simply jogging or running from clue to clue is not allowed!

HOW FIT DO I NEED TO BE?

You'll use public transport (buses, tubes, trains, etc) to get around, so there'll be lots of walking but a reasonable level of fitness will do.

The races usually last approx 3 hours with plenty of stops.

“High-stakes and high-energy! I'll never look at a London bus the same way again 😆   Loved every minute🏃‍♀️‍➡️🏁”

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Starting in a Central London location, the teams will each be given a menu of tasks to choose from, and a few minutes for discussion and planning. The tasks include Photo Challenges, Activities, Treasure Hunts and Timed Tasks, each one scoring a specific number of points (the harder or further away it is, the more points!)

There are also Buying Tasks for which the teams must use an amount of money that they're given during the briefing. The budget each team has available to spend will depend on how well the individual team members have done with their fundraising before the event - see below. The more budget you have, the more points you're likely to score ...

Teams can make their own decisions about where to go and which tasks to attempt based on their own strategy: do they want to go for lots of quick low-point wins, or a couple of high-scoring tricky challenges? Either way, planning efficient journeys and earning points en route is essential.

“A fun afternoon exploring the city, racing my friends, and ending in a pub. What more could you want?! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

WHAT FUNDRAISING DO I NEED TO DO?

If you want to participate in a Fundraising Race, you'll be asked to raise (or donate!) money for a good cause. Your event organisers may set a minimum amount, but there'll be no maximum. The amount you fundraise may directly affect your success, though!

At the beginning of the race, you will be given a 'pot' of money. The amount in this pot will have been calculated as a percentage of what you personally have raised before the event (usually 1-3%).

When you're put into a team, you'll add your pot to your colleagues' pots, and the total money will be the team's budget for the Buying Tasks, so the more you all raise, the more points you'll be able to score.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Most importantly: Payment for transport. You can travel around London on any Transport for London services - including buses, trains, tubes and trams - but will need to pay the fares yourself. As long as you consistently use the same payment method (contactless, mobile or Oyster), TFL will typically cap those costs at about £10, though, no matter how many times you hop on and off. See here for info.

You will also need comfortable walking shoes, water, sunscreen, umbrella/coat and a smartphone with a camera, google, maps and GPS for navigation.

And you might also consider a pen, some paper, a compass and some snacks.

WHO WILL BE IN MY TEAM?

You don't need to come in a team - we'll group people on the day!

Teams are generally 3-4 people, and you can play with friends and family, or take the opportunity to network with others.

Children are welcome but will count as team members so they/you will need to fundraise their share! Dogs are also welcome, and don't need to fundraise(!), but beware: their access to some transport options and buildings (including the start and end venues) may not be permitted.
