Westminster, CA: Westminster Adoption Group & Services W.A.G.S.) in Westminster, CA, has just taken in 125 rabbits (which, thanks to births, now number over 150) after they were surrendered by someone who was in over their head. They desperately need help from other groups to take in some of these rabbits. You can read about it here: -rabbits-will-need-foster-furrever-homes-after-cypress-owner-surrendered-them/ and you can visit their Facebook page here.
If you are a first-time flemish giant owner, you will need to spend from $30-$50 on rabbit housing, around $250 on spaying or neutering, $30-$50 on rabbit food, and $200+ on medication, vet visits, grooming, pet insurance.
Before buying the animal, make sure to call and see if the farm currently has rabbits available for sale, check the animal in person, and feel free to take a veterinarian with you to inspect the animal, if the seller allows it.
Cats and dogs are the most common victims of animal hoarding cases. Yet, HSU has seen a significant increase in rabbit hoarding in 2022. Hoarding typically begins with just a few unsterilized animals. However, breeding can become unmanageable when kept in close quarters, not accurately sexed, and separated. For example, rabbits can start reproducing as young as 4-5 months of age, gestate for 31 days, and have anywhere between 1-12 offspring.
We have seen an increase in rabbit hoarding cases, and the community is struggling to keep up. HSU has taken in 783 rabbits since 2020. The average family surrenders 4 rabbits at a time, but some are surrendering up to 20 animals. Animal hoarding is a complex issue that encompasses mental health, animal welfare, and public safety. Most people do not intend to hoard or neglect animals, but with rabbits doing what rabbits are known to do, intentional and unintentional breeding quickly leads to hoarding conditions.
The Humane Society of Utah Admissions team works with pet owners who choose to surrender some of their animals and helps them adequately care for their remaining pets. We offer assistance through spay and neutering and sharing information about community resources. HSU has 9 rabbit kennels, and rabbits currently have an average on-site length of stay of 18 days. Rabbits make great pets. However, they take considerably longer than cats and dogs to get adopted. If you are interested in adopting a rabbit, visit www.utahhumane.org/adopt.
Miso is from Seoul, Korea. She graduated from University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Physiology and Human Biology. Her interest in science and love of animals has always made me curious about becoming a veterinarian. I have grown up with many different types of pets such as chickens, rabbits, fishes, hedgehog and dogs and my passion to help animals has naturally grown deeper. When Miso's not at work, she enjoys watching movies and hanging out with friends and family. She is very excited to have joined the Spinks team and looks forward to learning more about veterinary medicine and services.

Does your pet just need a nail trim? No problem! Our veterinarians perform nail trims on cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and birds both small and large. If your parakeet, conure or cockatoo needs a beak trim or wing trim, we can do that too! Appointments are required, and may be limited for exotic pets based on the availability of the veterinarian, so please do call ahead. PLEASE NOTE: effective January 2019, Bellevue Animal Hospital will require that any cat or dog who visits our hospital for a nail trim appointment must be up-to-date on its Rabies vaccination. This new requirement is to ensure the safety of our staff, of you and your pet, and of our other clients and patients. Rabies vaccinations are required by law in our area for all cats and dogs over the age of 4 months, and the vaccination must be kept current. (Rabies vaccinations are first given between the ages of 12-16 weeks, again one year later, and again every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine used.) If your pet received its vaccination at a hospital or clinic other than our own, please be prepared to provide us with a current Rabies vaccination certificate that includes the name and license number of the vaccinating veterinarian; this certificate must be presented either prior to or at the time of your appointment. A rabies tag is not sufficient proof of current vaccination status and will not be accepted as such. If you have any questions, please give us a call at 402-291-1255.
