Quran Lens — Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 1, 2026
Quran Lens ("the extension") helps you identify verses (ayahs) of the Qur'an that you encounter on websites and instantly read their translation, Tafsir al-Muyassar, and listen to recitation. Your privacy is designed into the extension: nothing about your browsing is tracked, logged, or sold.
1. What data the extension processes
• Text you explicitly submit: Arabic text you paste into the popup, or text you select on a page when you invoke "Identify Qur'an Ayah".
• Images you explicitly submit: a screenshot region you choose to capture, or an image on a web page you choose via the right-click menu — only when you start image identification.
• Your settings: chosen UI language, translation language, reciter, toggles, verses you save, and the Google AI (Gemini) API key you enter yourself. These are stored in your browser through Chrome's storage API and sync across your own Chrome profile if you have sync enabled.
The extension does not collect browsing history, keystrokes, cookies, credentials, or any data in the background. It processes page content only in direct response to an action you take.
2. How submitted data is used and where it is sent
• Text identification: pasted or selected text is matched locally on your device against the full Qur'an text bundled inside the extension. No selected or pasted text is sent to any server.
• Image identification: when you identify an image, that single image is sent to Google's Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com) using the API key you provide, solely to read and transcribe the Arabic verse shown in the image. The transcript is then matched locally. Google's processing is governed by the Google Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) and the Google APIs / Generative AI terms (https://ai.google.dev/terms). Image identification is optional and only runs when you trigger it.
• Audio: when you play recitation, verse audio is streamed from Quran.com (api.quran.com / verses.quran.com).
All bundled translations and Tafsir text live inside the extension and work offline; they are never uploaded anywhere.
3. Data retention and third parties
• The extension has no backend server, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party trackers.
• The developer never receives your API key, your screenshots, your selected text, or your saved verses.
• Data sent to Google and Quran.com is transmitted over encrypted connections and is retained only according to those services' own policies.
• Your settings and saved verses remain in your browser's extension storage until you remove them or uninstall the extension.
4. Permissions
• Access to websites (all URLs): so the extension can offer verse identification on any site where you encounter Qur'an text. It acts only when you invoke it — it does not monitor pages passively.
• Storage: to remember your settings, saved verses, and API key locally.
• Context menus: to add the right-click "Identify Qur'an Ayah" options.
• Active tab: to capture the region or screenshot of the tab you are explicitly using.
5. Children's privacy
The extension does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone and is suitable for general audiences.
6. Your choices
• Do not enter a Gemini API key — text-based identification, translations, and Tafsir continue to work fully; only image identification is disabled.
• You can restrict the extension's site access in Chrome (click the extension icon → "This can read and change site data").
• Uninstalling removes all locally stored settings and saved verses.
