Dão Demarcated Region was created in 1908. Known as the “Portuguese burgundy” , Dão region, in the center of Portugal (at “Beira Alta” province) was the first demarcated region of non-liqueur wines of the country.
It is in Cumieira, parish of S. João de Lourosa, municipality of Viseu, where we can find approximately thirteen hectares of vineyards of Quinta dos Penassais.
The vineyards are part of this family business, exclusively linked to the wine sector, which thus maintains its tradition and history since 1385. They are in granite soil and have a southern exposure. Also, they have an average age of over 25 years and a noticeable production of 60 thousand liters of red wines and 15 thousand liters of white wines.
The existing varieties in the vine vines are only those recommended for this Demarcated Region of Dão, with a high percentage of Touriga Nacional in reds and Encruzado in whites.
The red wines are the result of a vinification carried out in traditional wineries, whose fermentation is carefully controlled by the winemaker Eng. José Carlos Oliveira. These wines are full-bodied, smooth, ruby colored, enhanced in aroma and with a wild berry flavor.
The white wines are vinified from an open spout, with fermentation in stainless steel tanks, wooden barrels, and controlled temperature, thus allowing the production of excellent white wines with a fruity aroma and a soft and fresh taste.
Its subsequent packaging in bottles allows it to rest in compartmentalized cellars, which are separated by years of harvest.
Over the years of its existence, Quinta dos Penassais has been awarded several prizes for the quality of its wines, distributed among the best vintages, presenting in its curriculum several diplomas from competitions for Production and from international competitions for bottled wines.
