My Norton 360 quick scan has been "initializing" for a couple of hours now. Usually, it only takes a few minutes to run the scan. I'm on Windows 10. Any idea what's going on here? A few weeks ago, it was doing something similar, but I fixed the problem by shutting own my windows and then starting it back up (not "restarting" -- which I guess is a problem with N360 -- but shutting windows down and starting back up separately. That fix didn't work this time around. At least this time I was able to run a live update manually, which I couldn't do the last time I had a problem. Now, my quick scan has locked up. Any help would be appreciated.

Be sure you are using the Restart command. Not 'Shut down' and startup again if you have Windows Fast Startup feature enabled. If you use Windows 8/8.1, 10 or 11, there can be an issue with the Windows Fast Startup feature.. See more information here. (credit peterweb)

Thanks. I didn't realize that I had the "fix" backwards. I just reread the earlier issue I had and saw that it was the separate shut down and start up that was the problem. I did "restart" after a live update and that fixed it. I should have read what I went through in the previous problem. Sorry about that.

Is my configuration correct? As I do not see any status changes for Last Full / Last Quick scan in Defender ->Endpoint -when checking my testing devices. All other Status Types are green (Platform, Security Intelligence, Engine, Defender Antivirus Mode - Active)

@MiSum83

Did you manage to figure this one out ?

I'm setting mine up at the moment, and am completely confused by the following settings in the Antivirus Policy:

Scheduled Scan Time

Scheduled Quick Scan Time

Scan Parameter

The two schedule options both state this in the information section: "The scan type will depends(sic) on what scan type is selected in the Defender/ScanParameter setting"

While "Scan Parameter" has options for QuickScan, and FullScan.... This makes having a spearate Quick scan schedule, and full scan schedule, superfluous at best, and nonsensical at worst.

I'm about to do my own tests and decipher the same confusing settings hopefully, but if you have any light to shed on how these settings are meant to be configured to have both a QuickScan AND FullScan run on a schedule within the same policy, it would be much appreciated.

If you have a QUICK scan time set aside (Schedule Quick Scan Time) doesn't it make sense that (Scan Parameter) ONLY has (Full Scan/Not Configured) as possible values?

If you have options to configure QUICK and FULL scans, doesn't it make sense to have two possible drop down boxes "Schedule Scan Day-QUICK" and "Schedule Scan Day-FULL"?

@VladanOEI

This one was definitely confusing as hell. I ended up just testing it all myself to see how it behaved.

The following settings relate to a single scan type of your choosing:

"Scan Parameter" Choose Quick or Full

"Schedule Scan Day" Choose Day

Schedule Scan Time" Choose Time

The following is it's own daily quick scan:

"Schedule Quick Scan Time" Pick the time of day that your daily quick scan will run.

If you want a quick scan only once a week, and a Full scan once a week as well, you'll need to apply TWO separate policies and use the following three settings in each policy:

"Scan Parameter" Choose Quick or Full

"Schedule Scan Day" Choose Day

Schedule Scan Time" Choose Time

This will give you a quick scan that only runs once a week in one policy, and a full scan that only runs once a week in the other policy.

I understand this is dumb. But in saying that, the quick scans are not even noticable across my servers. I would advise just running a quick scan daily, and then a scheduled full scan once a week within a single policy.

I hope this makes as much sense as possible on a subject that seems engineered to be confusing.

@WiingreenMorten Configuration Profiles pointing to the same object on Windows 10 towards Microsoft Defender results in errors and conflicts reporting in Intune. I solved it in my situation the following way. In both Profiles I configured a QuickScan(Default) Everyday 12:00PM (720) And deployed the PowerShell script I posted earlier through platform scripts in Intune that creates a scheduled task that runs a powershell command to start the desired Full Scan Every Wednesday at 12:00PM.

I like Netscan: SoftPerfect Network Scanner : fast, flexible, advanced. It has worked well for us in the past when we do not have a device scanned with Spiceworks. Many times you can get the host name of the device when you use this tool, which is often helpful in troubleshooting. I can tell you that if we are talking about a Windows computer that does not have the ports open to respond to a ping request, this tool cannot detect it.

Advanced IP Scanner is a fast and reliable solution for network scanning. It will allow you to quickly and easily retrieve all the required information about the computers connected to the network. With a single click of the mouse, it is possible to turn a remote PC on or off, connect to it via Radmin, and much more. - See more at: -ip-scanner.com/faq/#sthash.78q8kNJu.dpuf

I use Advanced IP Scanner. quick and simple to install and other information such as mac address, manufacturer, NetBIOS name. You can even add your own comments. It also has a nice remote boot utility.

Thank you everyone for your input! I looked at all the options and for my purposes look@lan seemed to do the best job.plus I loaded Fing on my nexus 4 and I can scan from my phone. Thanks again and once again the spice community comes through.

I have a 1 TB HDD so I want to test for bad sectors or bad blocks but badblocks takes a LOT of time in Linux (barely 4.66% done in 6 hours 3 minutes). In Windows however chkdsk scans in a few seconds and it couldn't find any errors.

Obviously the reason why chkdsk runs so fast is because it doesn't check for bad sectors by default. You have to run it with /r switch to scan for bad sectors, at which point it will get slow as well.

As for the difference between badblocks and chkdsk, the first one is a dedicated tool which discovers bad sectors, while the latter is a general-purpose disk check utility shipped with Windows which happens to have the bad sector recovery feature.

In the past I have always been able to pin the scan icon to the quicklaunch taskbar. I do not want to have to open the entire program for a scan, which I perform often. As I remember, the HP program components used to be layered underneath the printer in the Start button, and you could then pin the action you wanted to the taskbar. Now the only thing that is layered is the HP printer in its entirety. I wouldn't have chosen Windows 10, but I'm stuck with it. Any help would be highly appreciated.

I didn't see this response until tonight. Once again I am looking for the instructions on how to add the scan icon.

The screenshot Banhein posted is not at all what I see on my computer. The only option is to pin the entire program, not a dropdown of all the separate components that used to be there.

I know I found a solution on another thread that had something to do with deleting/changing something in the programming. Why HP changed what used to be a simple function is beyond me. Apparently, they're subscribing to the MS "if it ain't broke, let's break it" mode.

I found this on another thread. While it's not the original solution I found awhile back, this appears to work for most people. It's not working for me, exactly, because I seem to have a bigger issue of not being able to delete all components of the prior drivers.

I had the same issue, running Win7 with no issues for years, forced to upgrade to Win10 when MS stopped providing Win7 security updates. Installed the HP drivers for my 7612 series all-in-one at least twice, and while the printer and scanner worked, the "HP Scan" item was never placed under the HP folder in the Win10 Start menu, so there was nothing to click to add to the taskbar. Typing "HP Scan" in the Cortina search box always lead me to Windows Print and Scan, which I didn't want. Google searches were useless, everyone said the same thing, reinstall drivers from HP site to get the HP Scan item back on the Start Menu, then pin. But no HP Scan ever appeared.

Here's what I did to finally make it work...when I installed the HP drivers, it placed a shortcut for my printer on my desktop. When opened, this shortcut had all the utilities for the printer, including HP Scan. I started HP Scan from here. Once it was opened, an "HP Scan" icon appeared on the Win10 task bar. If you right-click this icon, you'll see options to pin to taskbar or pin to start menu. I did both, then closed HP Scan. Sure enough, the icon remained on the taskbar, and it opened HP Scan when I clicked on it. The HP Scan tile is now also pinned to the Win10 Start menu, and I can start from there as well. I still don't have "HP Scan" listed under the HP folder, but this works just as well for me. 152ee80cbc
