Speakers, Panelists and Moderators

(in the order of appearance)

Aditya Joshi (he/him) [Host]: Aditya Joshi is a gay man who grew up in India and who now lives in Australia. His research interests are sentiment analysis and health informatics. (Twitter: @aadi_joshi)

Daniel Beck (he/they) [Speaker]: Daniel is an extrovert who talks too much and spends too much time playing strategy games, which is probably the reason why he ended up becoming an academic. He draws his gay energy from watching and rewatching copious amounts of Eurovision. In the rare moments he manages to dodge his inner demons and avoid imposter's syndrome, he is a Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, working on whatever comes his way as long as it does not involve BERT it involves modelling of uncertainty in some way. (Twitter: @beckdaniel)

His talk will be about how his experiences living as a latino gay made him realise that standard queer theories do not apply to him, how he realised that is not a problem and how all of that connected to his vision for NLP.

Gwena Cunha (she/her) [Speaker]: Gwena Cunha is a Brazilian living in South Korea and doctoral student (soon-to-be-graduate!) studying incomplete sequential data classification and generation, most recently with a focus in NLP with noisy text. She's an international Ultimate Frisbee player who loves country hopping to toss a flat ball around with friends and a happily converted cat lady thanks to her cat-loving partner. (LinkedIn: gwenacunha)

In her talk, Gwena will share her experience being Queer in South Korea and the challenges of leading a double life in a conservative city in Asia.

Diana Galván (she/her) [Speaker]: Diana is a 3rd year NLP PhD student at Tohoku University, where she tries to teach computers common sense for machine reading comprehension. She is currently exploring visual text as a source for real-world knowledge acquisition. Her lifelong passion for karate has been eclipsed for the last few years by research, but she has not given up on her dream of representing Mexico one day. (Twitter: @devoidikk)

She will talk about how it has been to be pushed in the closet in Japan, a country that leads on education and technology, but is so behind when it comes to diversity and inclusion.

Parmesh Sahani (he/him) [Speaker]: Parmesh Shahani is Vice President at Godrej Industries Ltd. and the founder of the Godrej India Culture Lab. He is a passionate advocate for LGBTQ inclusion in corporate India. (Twitter: @parmeshs)

In this talk, Parmesh Shahani, the author of Queeristan will talk about why and how he has constructed his book like a Bollywood masala film, and the impact he hopes this will make on its wider audience.

Tanvi Anand (she/her) [Panel Moderator]: Tanvi is a fierce feminist and an LGBTQ+ ally. She works at an AI analytics company in India, while exploring the world of Computational Social Science. She looks forward to telling her grandkids how she graduated during a pandemic. (Twitter: @sinvuponcosv)

Solidarity Foundation India [Panelists]: They are a registered trust based in India supporting sex workers and gender/sexual minorities. The main communities that they partner with are non-English speaking sex workers and gender/sexual minorities who are at the frontlines of social change.

Queer Straight Alliance and Fruits in Suits Hong Kong [Panelists]: Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) is the largest queer student network in Hong Kong. Together with Fruits in Suits HK, over the past nine years, their mentorship program has facilitated the multi-dimensional development of over 500 student mentees through the guidance of professional mentors from an increasingly wide range of industries.
