Queer HCI

A decade of Queer scholarship in HCI

I am writing a three-part series for ACM interactions exploring “the entanglements between queer desire and the design of computer-related technologies”. Unfortunately, there is limit on how many references I can include in the ACM interactions column. So, I wanted to publish this addendum to my interactions column as a ‘public reference’ for anyone interested in queer scholarship. In this page, I have consolidated some of the exciting research published in the past decade (2011–2021) that bring queer perspectives to design of technology. This is NOT a literature survey and this list is NOT comprehensive. I have primarily focused on research published in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). I have grouped a total of 103 works into 6 categories. Many of these works span across categories and not exclusive to a group.

  1. Building Theory: 20 works under this group build HCI theory by drawing upon Queer Theory and perspectives

  2. Queering X: 16 works under this group deploy 'queering' as a verb and produce novel insights for specific design domains

  3. Gender and HCI: 15 works under this group explore various gender related issues in technology design with respect to queer identities and experiences

  4. Designing for/with LGBTQ Groups: 22 works under this group focus on designing technologies for/with LGBTQ groups

  5. Social Networking Sites (SNS): 22 works under this group research the design and use of SNS by various queer populations

  6. Digital Games: 8 works under this group engage with various aspects of digital game design from queer perspectives
