Queering Social Robot Identity Performance
What, or who, should a social robot “look like”, and why does it matter? We invite you (aged 13-25) to join us for a one hour session on queering social robot identity performance - that is the ways social robots might perform norm-breaking social identities. We’ll give you a quick introduction to the concept of identity performance before inviting you to design your own social robot personas. Capacity is limited. To guarantee a seat please contact Katie at katie.winkle@it.uu.se and let us know whether you would prefer to join the 12-13 or 14-15 slot. Any empty seats remaining on the day will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Hej! I'm Bedour Alshaigy (she/they) and I'm a Lecturer at the IT Department at Uppsala University researching human-computer interaction. I have been part of several STEM community gathering events to share my experience and enthusiasm about the wonderful world of IT.
Virginia (they/them) studies role models in computing and engineering education, and is passionate about reading. They are a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of IT at Uppsala University.

Talk: Technology as mirrors---Investigating robots to see ourselves / Teknologi som speglar---Att undersöka robotar för att se oss själva
There are several examples of objects made to look like humans, created by humans tens of thousands of years ago. Humans have also, for hundreds of years, attempted to recreate human behaviours, with various degrees of success, in human-looking objects. With the development of electronic computers the last century, the ability to do so has grown at an incredible rate, which has led to the development of plenty fascinating and impressive robots the last decades. The benefits of such machines lies not only in what they can do, but also in what they can say about us as humans. Since these machines are built as an imitation of some aspect of us, investigating them can tell us something about who we see ourselves as, what we value, and who we allow to be considered one of us. Investigating how and where we choose to use these machines, and which humans they replace, can also reveal clues about how we see each other and what role we want technology to play in society.

Det finns flera exempel på objekt som är gjorda för att se ut som människor, skapade av människor för tiotusentals år sedan. Människor har även, i flera hundratals år, försökt återskapa mänskligt beteende, med varierande framgång, i objekt som ser ut som människor. I och med förra århundradets framsteg med att utveckla elektroniska datorer har förmågan att skapa sådana objekt ökat med en otrolig hastighet, vilket har lett till utvecklingen av flertalet fascinerande och imponerande robotar de senaste decennierna. Nyttan med sådana maskiner ligger inte bara i vad de kan göra, utan också i vad de kan säga om oss som människor. Eftersom dessa maskiner är byggda som imitationer av någon aspekt av oss, går det att säga saker om vem vi ser oss själva som, vad vi ser som värdefullt och vem vi tillåter att se som en av oss genom att undersöka dem. Att undersöka hur och var vi väljer att använda dessa maskiner, och vilka människor de ersätter, kan också avslöja ledtrådar till hur vi ser på varandra och vilken roll vi vill att teknologi ska spela i samhället.

Erik started his academic journey in theoretical physics and cognitive science at Lund University, and recently defended his doctoral thesis in informatics at the University of Skövde. Erik is not only interested in technology and humans, but also the meeting and interaction between the two --- something he has investigated within the academic study of human-robot interaction.

Erik startade sin akademiska resa inom teoretisk fysik och kognitionsvetenskap vid Lunds universitet, och försvarade nyligen sin doktorsavhandling inom informationsteknologi vid högskolan i Skövde. I natur existerar många fraktala mönster med struktur i alla skalor, inklusive snöflingor, ormbunkar och blixt. Ytterligare fraktaler, som drakkurvor, spökskepp och 'matemagiska' mattor, har designats av matematiker och andra forskare. Fraktaler används även för att generera terräng i datorspel, analysera bilder från MRI-kameror, och skapa antenner för mobiltelefoner. Under detta föredrag ska vi diskutera sådana fraktaler, titta på många bilder, och försöka svara på några fascinerande frågor: Hur lång är en kuststräcka? Är hela universum en enda stor fraktal? Och vad gör verkligen matematiker?!

Kirsti (she/her) is a mathematician at Uppsala University, in the group Dynamical Systems and Number Theory, and her research involves counting solutions to equations, sometimes in fractal sets. Apart from that, she teaches various mathematics courses as well as attending the LGBTQIA+ network's 'fiqa' and other events.
