The Importance of Self-Of-The-Therapist Work in Gender Affirming Care
In this keynote presentation, Dr. Giammattei will discusses the impact of personal bias, the key person-of-the-therapist work necessary for all of us doing gender affirmative work, the importance of this knowledge on relational reflexivity with transgender, non-binary, gender expansive clients and their families, and ways to use what we learn about ourselves, our narratives, and our relationships with our clients as advocates for change.

Giammattei, PhD is a clinical family psychologist in Northern California specializing in family therapy with a particular focus on transgender, non-binary, or gender expansive youth and their families, as well as relational therapy where one or more partners are queer or gender diverse. He is a researcher, educator, and professor at Alliant International University teaching graduate and post-graduate courses in LGBT psychology and family systems. He is the founder/CEO of the Gender Health Training Institute and the TransFamily Alliance, and has served several officer positions and on the board of both local and national family therapy organizations. We are choosing to offer this conference in an online format for several reasons.
We continue to worry about the ongoing global health crisis of COVID-19, and would like to make the safest choice possible.
An online conference will allow a larger number of people to attend who may not otherwise be able to afford travel and lodging connected with another conference.
Providing the conference online will allow us to keep our costs at minimal levels, which can, in turn, be directly translated into registration savings for you.
Continuing Education Units are being evaluated and established through the American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy.
Anyone can register for this conference but our program was created for systemic mental health providers, students, and scholars. If you would like to attend you can but please bear this in mind when attending sessions. Thank you.
You don't have to be - but it doesn't hurt! If you are interested in queer, trans, and sexual identity studies and therapy - this interest network could be for you. Visit our website here, and if you are interested, consider joining! You have to be a member of AAMFT in order to be a member of QTAN.
If you are a student member of AAMFT, joining QTAN would enable you to attend the conference for free! You do not have to be trans and/or queer to join, you just need to be interested in queer and trans mental health care.
You will have to verify with the specific program you are interested in earning a certificate with to see if the presentations from this conference count for credit in their program.
Please contact conference co-chair Mary Nedela, PhD (mnedela@ccsu.edu) to let them know what your access needs are. We will do our best to accommodate as many access needs as possible.
To be announced.
As many sessions as possible will be recorded but they will only be made available to those who register to attend the conference.
