Computational design of metal chelators
This research line designs multifunctional ligands, combining metal chelation with optimal reduction potentials to enhance intra- and extracellular metal redistribution. Selected ligands and their metal complexes are synthesized and characterized in collaboration with experimental groups, then evaluated for cytotoxicity and oxidative stress reduction.
Computational metal-peptide models
This research line develops computational 3D models of metal-peptide systems (Fe and Cu) relevant to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases using combined classical/ab initio molecular dynamics, quantum chemical calculations, and homology modeling to elucidate their structural dynamics and low-energy conformational landscapes.
Role of metal cations in Alzheimer’s disease
This research line evaluates reaction mechanisms of iron and copper complexes in Alzheimer's disease oxidative stress, conducting calibration studies for accurate computational treatment of open-shell systems, while assessing antioxidant activity of previously reported molecules with suitable reduction potentials and new candidates from Colombian natural products.
