MUSIC: Lesson 1: Form: Strophic, Unitary, Binary, and Ternary

At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to;

1. Recognize the design or structure of simple musical forms such as unitary, strophic, binary, and ternary.

2. Perform songs in unitary, strophic, binary, and ternary.

Cadence - feeling of natural pause about by the melody ending in a restful tone.

Songs can have Sections:

binary or AB form     - the designs of songs have two different parts

• first section - labelled A

• second section - labelled B

• can be determined - contrasts in moods, melody. or rhythm

Example of the Song : Ringkindingkinding  - Visayan folk Song

ternary or ABA form - it has three sections the third section is just a repetition of the first section

• middle section - contrasting with the first and  the third sections

Example: Santa Clara - Tagalog Song 

unitary form -  only one part or one section

Example : Ding- Ding a Diawa - Maranaw Folk Song

strophic for or AAA form - only one part but repeated many times

Example: Tao, Tao Po
