Guidelines In Planning the Project
To effectively plan a project, first choose and research the project, considering its design and feasibility. Select a suitable fabric type, ensuring it is durable, affordable, and visually appealing. Next, determine the required fabric quantity and measurements. Outline each step of the process and create a project plan to serve as a guide throughout the project.
Preparing a Project Plan
A project plan contains the following parts:
I. Name of the Project – This refers to the specific name of the project.
II. Objectives – This refers to your purpose or aims in doing the project.
III. Sketch/Drawing – This is a simple, clear, and detailed illustration or drawing of the project.
IV. Materials Needed – This provides a list of all materials needed to complete the project. It includes specifications such as measurement, kind, size, number, and color.
V. Procedure – This is the step-by-step procedure to be followed in doing the project.
VI. Evaluation – This is a scorecard or rubric used to evaluate the project done. This consists of a set of criteria descriptions with corresponding descriptive and/or numerical points.
Choosing the Fabric for the Project
When choosing fabric, consider its purpose, the occasion, and desired qualities. Knowing fabric types helps in selecting the best material. Here’s a quick overview:
Cotton – Ideal for warm weather; it’s breathable, absorbent, and durable. Used for everyday items like pillowcases and table covers.
Linen – Made from flax, it’s cool, absorbent, and versatile, suitable for dresses and bedcovers.
Silk – Luxurious and smooth, this expensive fabric is durable, often used for blouses and special bedcovers.
Wool – Thick and warm, perfect for cold weather clothing like sweaters and jackets.
Synthetic – Lightweight and easy-care, with options like nylon and rayon; these fabrics resist wrinkles and dry quickly.
Preparing the Fabric Before Sewing
Proper fabric preparation improves the look and fit of your project. Follow these steps:
Pre-shrinking – Soak the fabric overnight, then hang it to dry without wringing to prevent shrinkage later.
Straightening – Check that the fabric’s crosswise and lengthwise grains form a right angle. If needed, gently stretch it to correct alignment.
Pressing – Iron out wrinkles on the wrong side, adjusting the iron temperature to suit the fabric type.
