About Pysanka

A pysanka (Ukrainian: писанка) or pysanky (plural: писанки) is a Ukrainian Easter egg, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist method. The word pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write" or "to in scribe", as the designs are not painted on, but written (inscribed) with beeswax.

About the Instructor

Nestor Topchy (b. 1963, New Jersey) is a painter, sculptor, installation artist and performance artist.  Nestor learned to write ornate Ukrainian Easter eggs - Pysanky (plural of Pysanka) in childhood, with his mother and paternal family, who immigrated from Stalinist Ukraine as displaced persons following World War II.
You can see his works at a solo exhibit at the Menil Collection opening in August 2023.
