Metal inert gas or MIG welding, also referred to as gas metal arc welding (GMAW), is a process of arc welding in which a continuous solid wire electrode is fed through a welding gun and into the weld pool in order to join the two base materials together. Shielding gas is also sent through the welding gun to protect the weld pool from contamination.
TIG welding is often used to weld thin sections of steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, aerospace alloys, and copper alloys. The process allows for greater operator control over the weld than other processes such as shielded metal arc welding and gas metal arc welding. This grants stronger, higher quality welds.
