Dame Catherine Tizard: Mayor, 1989-1990, Auckland City Council. Catherine Tizard was elected Mayor of Auckland City in 1983 and was the first woman to hold this position.
She was re-elected in 1989 but resigned in 1990 on her appointment as Governor-General of New Zealand. Again, she was the first woman to be appointed to this role.
