Puzzle Fiesta
New Mexico Math Festivals and Circles
We are super excited to be able to offer these interactive math activities in Albuquerque, NM. The primary goal of our events is to promote an enjoyable and meaningful experience for participants, thus helping students develop positive mathematical identities. Puzzle Fiesta is the brainchild of Ishtar Rosario Medina. It includes a comprehensive set of opportunities to bolster and extend mathematical play within our community with a collection of ground-up, informal math education endeavors.
Math festivals are public events that celebrate mathematics. The activities are geared toward 5-12 year olds, but since they are "low-threshold and high-ceiling", there is something for everyone. The goal is to have people leave the festival being able to say, “This was fun! I can do this! When is the next one?”
Math circles are creative learning spaces where people explore mathematics regularly and in depth. The emphasis is on play and rigor, modeling the way mathematicians do mathematics. We are hosting evening events for middle and high school math teachers looking for professional development opportunities and a way to gain and share excitement about mathematics.
The weekly exhibit is a Saturday morning drop-in spot for youth and parents to do some math play within Explora Children's Museum. We are on the first floor at Explora on Saturdays from 10:00am - 3:00pm. We have a mixture of hands-on activities with short interactives and math crafts sponsored by MathHappens.
