In 2014, Siris Capital acquired the Junos Pulse business from Juniper Networks and formed the standalone entity, Pulse Secure. With the mission of empowering business productivity through secure and seamless mobility, the company began a new journey to help tackle mobile-security challenges. In the same year, Pulse Secure acquired the leading mobile security provider, MobileSpaces. In 2015, Pulse Secure launched Pulse One, which provided central policy management that enabled secure access for all endpoints and mobile devices to corporate applications on-premises and in the cloud.

Thanks @Princemachiavelli for the tip about openconnect. I ended up going on a rabbit hole and managed to get it to work based on this comment. It was stupidly simple and took all of 2 minutes as opposed to the 4 hours i wasted on trying to package pulse secure vpn client.

The pulse-cookie package looks pretty good and your packaging of it is pretty neat @erahhal. I started with no choices and now this thread has given me two choices and I am conflicted as I much prefer the Qt version over the selenium/Chromedriver version I got to work 2 days ago. Here is what I am using for reference,

Hi. I purchased a used (EOL) SRX 240H. I have no support purchased. Can I download the JUNOS PULSE vpn client version for free to connect with Winows 10 - like Pulse Secure Desktop Client 64 Bit Installer MSI for Windows 109.1r211 Oct 20193

Alternatively, I have seen customers downloading the most recent pulse secure client directly from the following link - -download/. However, it is not a recommended pulse version for connecting with SRX series devices.

To my knowledge, anyone can create a "customer care case" (ie non-technical case) and in that case you can mention this KB thread (mentioning that no entitlement should be required) yet your CSC account is not allowing you to download pulse client.

JunOS's Dynamic VPN on these older devices is getting long in the tooth anyway because it's IPSec only and the Pulse Secure client for mobile only supports SSL. It would be better if you deploy OpenVPN or some other VPN software and turn off HTTP/HTTPS on your internet-facing port. I understand newer versions of JunOS will support SSLVPN. It is best practice to put the management port of the SRX in an allowed list on your internal facing network, too.

BrandPackager runs on Windows only, but you use it to create the package files for Pulse Client for Windows and Pulse Client for OS X. A package file contains your edits to Pulse Client resource files. The edited resource files are installed into a special folder on the client. When Pulse Client needs to access a particular file, it checks this special folder first and uses the file if it is present. If Pulse Client does not find the file there, it uses the file that resides in the normal Pulse Client resource file location.

You can apply your changes to new or upgrade installations. You can also apply your customizations to an existing Pulse Client installation without installing or upgrading Pulse Client. Your changes to the Pulse Client user interface, message text, and online Help persist through normal client software upgrades.

I'll just go ahead and put this out there here and now, does anyone offer their services for this type of setup and configuration?

I'm definitely stuck between a rock and a hard place with this news and the behavior of the latest Pulse Secure client.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael, thanks for sharing your SRX model and firmware with us.

This evening we were able to successfully update (downgrade) our firmware to JUNOS 18.2R3.4, as you had mentioned you are running. Following installation and reboot the VPN connection once again worked as intended and we don't even seem to have any problems with Windows 10 Enterprise v20H2 as the client OS. I will warn you that I merely connected and confirmed on the SRX's junos cli that the connection looked good. I did not test it long enough to see any dropped connection or re-prompting for passwords, but the preliminary results are better than the errors we had on all client PC's connecting via dynamic vpn.

Steve, thanks for the update on Juniper's recommendations I honestly hadn't heard of the Juniper Secure Connect service, but I will make a point to recommend or at least investigate that in the future.

Alan,

Thanks for the additional information on the MS side of things. Traditionally they have a habit of eventually shoving updates down your throat regardless of your decision to block their feature updates. Good to know that they are continuing to allow 1909 to remain in place for an extended period of time, this should give me more than ample time to continue my testing, migrating VPNs, or waiting for Juniper to release another update.

After spending more time with this client the behavior is consistent at least, albeit extremely bizzare.

Upon initial connection I am good anywhere from 5-20 minutes then I get the disconnect and prompt to reconnect to the VPN. Within a minute I am disconnected again, but this time my wireless connection is also terminated. When the VPN password prompts this time I have to reconnect to my wireless network and then log into the VPN. For the next two or three minutes I am prompted multiple times for the VPN password. After 3-5 password prompts the VPN connection then remains stable for hours. It is the oddest thing.

It almost certainly has to be a client side issue and I am not convinced it isn't the driver on this device (I am running a 2019 Surface Pro Book 2 where I am seeing the issues). I've not found any additional drivers to test.

UCSF Pulse Secure VPN can be accessed by (1) using the Pulse Secure VPN client on your computer or smartphone client or (2) using the VPN web portal. All methods require that you have a UCSF Active Directory account and Duo two-factor authentication. See VPN Web Portal for more details.

The Pulse Secure VPN installed client is an application that runs on your desktop, laptop or mobile device and allows you to connect directly to the UCSF network as if you were on campus. When you are connected to the UCSF network, all your applications will work the same way they do when you are on campus.

Because locally installed Pulse Secure VPN client simplifies access when you aren't on campus, it's a good idea to make it your first choice when connecting remotely. More information about how to Install and Use Pulse Secure VPN Client (Windows & Mac) is available, or contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

The UCSF VPN web portal is your alternative method for accessing UCSF applications when you are on a non-UCSF computer and you cannot download or install local Pulse Secure VPN client. See VPN Web Portal for more details.

Important: The web VPN portal is only an alternative tool to access limited internal resources and does not provide the same full functionality and access as the locally installed Pulse Secure VPN client. We recommend installing Pulse Secure VPN client via software.ucsf.edu on nonpublic computers you use for UCSF work whenever possible. This is a one-time install.

this VPN client is Juniper Pulse Secure Client. But we also have a client from NCP Secure Entry Client, but this case only occurred with the Pulse .. client, which is why we had to uninstall Sophos again.

Problem Description: if the VPN client is switched on, the Internet is cut off from the PC with Sophos. We did a cross test by turning off Sophos, after which the internet was back. also backwards. Unfortunately, we were unable to switch off various individual options and then switch the Internet back on.

About the VPN issue - we've recently had a computer where the user installed an other secure VPN client (Forcepoint) because one remote organization required it. The VPN software that had something similar like Sophos Heartbeat integrated. So the VPN Client communicated some health data of the client computer to cloud servers where the VPN gateway of the organization checked the healt status of a client and a VPN to this client can - in theory - only be established if it's reported as healthy. In the end this VPN software killed all other VPN clients on the computer so it could not connect to any other VPN with any VPN client anymore until the Forcepoint software had been uninstalled. This computer also had Intercept X installed. So maybe there are side effects when using Secure VPN clients with Intercept X and it's HTTPS interception. e24fc04721
