If you are a photographer, High Dynamic Range is just in your pocket. Because it is truly the most popular method of shooting for real estate photography all over the world.
In this method, we shot with different levels of exposures in order to catch as much light as needed into the photos. The term "dynamic range" implies the ratio of light to dark in a photograph. Basically, our eyes can see and perceive an object because they take the contrast of light and dark reflected from that object, and we know the shape of the object because many different ratios of light to dark corresponding to different part of the objects make it near or far, low or high, small or big, etc. Applying those to a camera sensor which is also designed like human's eyes, we have a method that is old but gold. It can catch up many different levels of light ratio and then produce a mixture of those levels which is the same as what we can see in "real". And the "real" here is consistent with "real estate".
However, as soon as the shots are finished, this method is not gold yet. We need to do hard work for post-processing those multiple exposures. And here is where our editing techniques come along. Most of our process is on Camera Raw and Photoshop, and the main steps that should be done are following:
White balance
Color and brightness correction
Lens distortion removal
HDR bracketing
Image sharpening
Sky replacement
And the list goes on, including many other retouching techniques, such as removing items, adding fire place, lawn replacement. What we can do with our editing tools is much further than that. Many times we had come across with some very weird requirements from our customers, and most of the times we had done them perfectly. So, it is hard to say our limitation of doing some retouching with your images. Just try and find out the answer!
Many photographers choose twilight or dust photograph to be the top service they offer over their business. It might be the truth that if you do something special but similar to others, then it is no longer special. However, that is not the case of twilight photograph. One part of the story is twilight image has so many properties to be handled, much more than which a day edit should have. Light is the most important feature in photography, but if you have to do a shot with overcast sky or dusk sky, it become the biggest problem. As a result, when it comes to post-processing, the editing techniques are all more sophisticated which eventually produce so many variations of twilight editing style.
Another part of the reasons is that twilight edits is some kind of aesthetic technique that might make an real estate photo unrealistic. There is a tiny boundary line between those two looks and it really depends on the preference of a particular photographer. Most of the time, our clients come and say they want the edits looking realistic, and our mission is to make it mesmerizing but still as real as possible. Sometimes when they are on the other preference, we need to handle it occasionally. Here are the processing steps helping us to complete that diversification:
Twilight white balance
Brightness/darkness correction
Shadow removing
Twilight colors correction
Twilight sky replacement
It is impossible to list down all the techniques, because along the way we do twilight editing, there are so many techniques being combined to become a new one. So although they are uncountable but it is a truth that they all make the twilight photograph looks wonderful.
Virtual Staging is the most high-end technique in real estate photography. It alone requires so many steps to finish one single image, and the quality of the final product does not only depend on the technical skills of the editors but also on their creativity. Here the designing concepts come onto the top list of editing requirement. We are now using 3D Max to do all the 3D designs of the process in which the main steps should be done are as follows:
Building 3D frame
Furniture placement
3D rendering
Photo post-processing
