School Learning Action Cell: An Echo of the Training on the Multimodal, Adaptive, Technological, and Interactive Course of Learning for Teachers
In its commitment to providing continuous professional development for teachers, the Department of Education encourages the schools to conduct School Learning Action Cell (SLAC) which functions as a professional learning community for teachers that will help them improve practice and learner achievement (DO 35, s. 2016). Primarily, it focuses on upskilling the teachers as curriculum implementers to meet the growing demands of the educational system. Last April 4, 2023, Pantalan Senior High School (PSHS) held its SLAC session with the theme An Echo of the Training on the Multimodal, Adaptive, Technological, and Interactive Course of Learning for Teachers. The session was attended by the faculty and staff of PSHS.
At exactly 10 in the morning, the session started with a prayer that was led by Mrs. Sharon Padilla, Teacher II. It was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem which was presented through an audio-visual presentation.
For the opening remarks, Dr. Janet Apolinar, Principal II, discussed some important matters about the teaching-learning process which basically focused on the utilization of IDEA Exemplar. She reminded the attendees that the DepEd Regional Office expects the schools to strictly implement its use as a replacement for Daily/Weekly Lesson Log. Additionally, Dr. Apolinar congratulated the school’s School Improvement Plan (SIP) team for accomplishing its three-year plan and for being able to have it submitted to the district and the division. She also thanked the faculty and staff of PSHS for the collaborative effort that resulted in the planning success. She, likewise, grabbed the opportunity to briefly discuss some other important matters which relate to the school.
After the opening program, the session proper started with the first resource speaker, Mr. Michael Bathan, PSHS Master Teacher I, who discussed the topic IDEA Instructional Process in Lesson Plan/Exemplars Preparation. Mr. Bathan started his discussion by presenting the session’s Terminal and Enabling objectives. He also asked questions that caused the attendees’ engagement and participation. After preparing the attendees for the topic, Mr. Bathan automatically proceeded with the specifics of his topic. By presenting the Educational Landscape, the attendees were able to have a walkthrough of the paradigm shift of the Philippine Educational System. Afterward, the resource speaker elaborated on the different facets of the IDEA Exemplar through the point-by-point discussion of how each area can be effectively accomplished. Basically, IDEA stands for Introduction (Lesson Review, Purpose of the Lesson, Presentation of Samples), Development (Discussion, Mastery Development), Engagement (Application, Additional Activities), and Assimilation (Generalization and Abstraction, Evaluation). Mr. Bathan ended his talk by introducing the Implications and Challenge to the teachers.
For the continuation of the session, Mrs. Vigette Caisip, Teacher II, as the second resource speaker echoed the topic ESP Matic which primarily focused on website development as a learning resource for both the teachers and learners. Mrs. Caisip skillfully demonstrated the ways to develop a website that can be used in the different learning areas in senior high school. Through the use of Google Sites, the speaker presented how technology can be of great help in assisting teachers and learners in the teaching-learning process. Mrs. Caisip not only taught the attendees how to upload resources and link them to other sites, but she also helped the attendees how to make their developed website pleasing and appealing. As for the attendees’ output, they were divided by department and each department was required to develop at least one (1) website.
As the last topic for the SLAC, Mrs. Mariel Barcelon, the school’s Learning and Development (L and D) Coordinator, introduced Mrs. Lenie Parungao, Teacher III, as the third speaker. Mrs. Parungao’s discussion focused on the teacher orientation about the DepEd’s Wash in Schools (WinS) Program. The DepEd WinS Program was developed to achieve learning and health outcomes for Filipino students through a comprehensive, sustainable, and scalable school-based WASH program, in accordance with the State's mandate to defend children's rights to dignity, assistance, and protection from situations that would hinder their development. Through this orientation, the teachers were made aware of the considerations necessary to effectively and efficiently implement the program. Mrs. Parungao ended her discussion by presenting the result of the recently held WinS Monitoring where Pantalan Senior High School was awarded two (2) stars. Thanks to the ever-hard-working and dedicated WinS coordinator, Mrs. Lenie Parungao.
To conclude the program, Mrs. Barcelon congratulated and thanked the resource speakers for the skillful and expert discussions of their topics. She also extended her gratitude to the attendees and expressed her hope that the session provided them with new learning and skill through the multimodal, adaptive, technological, and interactive course conducted. After all this, she formally closed the program.
