And that’s a wrap!
The Philippines concluded its 2024 Paris Olympic campaign with four medals: two significant gold medals from gymnast Carlos Yulo, and two bronze medals from boxers Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio respectively.
Carlos Yulo attained two astonishing gold medals in Men’s Floor and Men’s Vault, facing Jake Jarman, Artem Dolgopyat, and Harry Hepworth. In the end, Yulo scored 15.000 on the floor and 15.166 in the vault, earning double gold for the Philipines.
Yulo also set a historic record, being the first Filipino athlete to win two gold medals in a single edition of the Olympics.
Aira Villegas faced Turkish boxer Buse Naz Çakıroğlu in the bronze medal match for the Women’s Flyweight, while Nesthy Petecio fought Polish boxer Julia Szeremeta in her bronze medal match. Both athletes conceded and secured bronze medals.
Other close medalists were pole vaulter EJ Obiena and golfer Bianca Pagdanganan, who both finished 4th in their respective sports. Obiena tied with 3rd place Emmanouil Karalis, with both reaching 5.9m, however, Obiena failed more attempts. Pagdanganan placed 4th with three other golfers with the same par score.
Finishing 37th among all competing nations, this year also marked the most gold medals Philippines has attained, the country’s best performance in its century-long Olympic history.
Nevertheless, congratulations to all 22 competing Filipino athletes for their unwavering dedication and for representing the Philippines with pride! Your victories will inspire future athletes of our nation. Mabuhay Pilipinas!
