Within ASD there can commonly be communication difficulties that impact an individual's everyday life. Speech language pathology can be a beneficial therapy in helping to establishing important communication skills.
Communication can significantly impact a person's everyday functioning in the world
This is seen in conversation, processing auditory information, understanding abstract language, and reading body language
This can lead to feelings of isolation, embarrassment, and an overall withdrawl from society
Society creates norms of what is acceptable and unacceptable within communication which can put stress on individuals to preform in the "right" way
Anxiety around communication can be a large factor in the difficulties one experiences. It can prevent an individual from wanted to or feeling able to participate in communication.
(Cummins, Pellicano, & Crane, 2020)
Speech language pathology targets many types of communication including, social communication, understanding meaning, and experessing one's wants and needs.
It develops communication skills and minimizes the mental health risk that come along with the anxiety of communicating (Cummins, Pellicano, & Crane, 2020).
One main goal is to teach skills that will be applied in many enviroments and have these skills be developed enough that the individual can apply them. Part of this is to have a spontatneous aspect to when the skills are displayed (Bruno, Gulati, & Mody, 2016).
It can be done in many settings, with family members, individually, or in groups. Many tecniques and programs are used in order to make it the most personalized towards each individual's needs and wants (Cummins, Pellicano, & Crane, 2020).
Many communication skills are improved through speech therapy (listed in above sections)
These skills can include semantics, pragmatic language, social interactions, understanding social cues, and overall functional communication skills (Adams et al., 2012).
Through improving communication skills, it gives the individual the chance to meet their full potential. This can help boost an individual's quality of life and overall mental health (Cummins, Pellicano, & Crane, 2020)
In one study, it was found that there was specifically improvment seen in social interactions and pragmatic language in school-aged children (Adams et al., 2012).
This impacts the lives of people with ASD by giving them a way to more effectively get their needs and wants met, and to find less difficulty in participating with their peers.
