A really enjoyable film about a renowned fighter who gets into various shenanigans revolving around control of a small town. As others have mentioned, the film is based on a few chapters of a much longer book, so I was afraid this would be one of those mega-convoluted Shaw Brothers movies with a million characters and an impossible-to-follow plot. I couldn't have been more wrong, happily; the film actually features an unusually (and delightfully) streamlined narrative for the studio. It's great. I mean, it's got Ti Lung being an ultra-charming badass, fantastic fights featuring inventive choreography, a fun playful vibe, and a handful of endearing characters. I'm not sure what more you could ask for from a movie (well, I guess you could ask for more fights in the middle, which drags a bit, but you can't have it all).
Once the mild surprise at my age (not to mention the shininess of my boots which had had their first clean in four years) had subsided, she entertained me with snippets of history about the working forest before agreeing with me that 11.30am was not too soon for a quick stop at a pub. The few locals that we met on our travels were all full of character.

During the snowy months, it takes a special effort to climb this peak because of the length of the approach. The good news is that this same approach offers wonderful cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through the Frasier Experimental Forest on old forestry roads.
The road now switchbacks through delightful forest to its end at mile 4.7, indicated only by a small loop. Be sure to stay left on the main road at the top of the first switchback (mile 3), where another unsigned road continues straight. We will end our tour here. A climb of Byers Peak from this point requires map and compass skills and also good telemark technique for the sometimes tight tree skiing on the lower section of the ridge.
