Submission Guidelines

CLOSED

Thanks for your interest in submitting; do peruse the following guidelines and follow them when submitting your work. Please note that we are a nonprofit journal and that we are unable to pay contributors at this time.

We publish work on the topic of history and we have specific themes per issue. Submissions are CLOSED. We will not read new submissions.

If your work is accepted, we ask for first serial rights and archival rights, but rights revert back to you right after publication.

Simultaneous submissions are totally accepted, but notify us immediately via email if your submission has been accepted elsewhere. If a work we have published is accepted elsewhere, please credit us as your work's first home. We prefer previously unpublished works, but feel free to submit those published on personal blogs/channels, social media, and defunct publications. Just ask if you're unsure!

There are no specifications on font, font size, or spacing, but do submit as a .doc/.docx or .pdf file. We prefer these formats, but if that doesn't work for you, feel free to paste your work into the body of the e-mail.

POETRY: Absolutely any form of poetry is desired. 1-5 poems, up to approx. 2,000 words each. All in one document.

PROSE: Short stories, CNF, and essays are all desired. 1-3 pieces, up to approx. 2,000 words each. All in one document.

Please submit to only one genre at a time. File names can be essentially anything as long as they contain your name and/or the title/topic of your piece. Or just...anything identifiable!

Add a content warning if your piece contains graphic depictions of violence or references to sexual assault, suicide, self-harm, and genocide. You may choose to warn for other topics at your discretion—and please do not send us work with explicit sexual content. Brief mentions are fine, but nothing graphic.

Further, we ask that you do not submit work that promotes white supremacy, eugenics, fascism, or bigotry of any kind. Likewise, we do not accept work promoting colonialism and imperialism. Exploring these themes, however, is 100% encouraged.

Please send your submissions to provenancejournal@asia.com. We do not ask for cover letters, but feel free to say hello and introduce yourself! We do, however, ask you for a brief bio (up to 100 words, first- or third-person is fine—be creative if you want). Your email's subject line can be pretty much anything.

After submitting, you can expect a response within 2–4 weeks. We're often even faster. Feel free to query after your submission if it has been more than a month. Have a lovely day!
