We aim at offering you a variety of activities that will contribute to your professional development, and mine as teacher educator as well! Here we describe these activities and you find the locations where they take place. Welcome to the study week in Kiel! We will have fun learning inside and outside the university!
On Monday, after the introductory activities, we have one of the many highlights of the study week: a school visit! We will visit the Hebbelschule Kiel, where we will have the opportunity to talk with the English, Spanish and German in-service teacher Sabine Burkhardt.
In order to be prepared for this activity and get the most out of it, we will take some time together to look at the school profile and one of the ERASMUS+ projects where Ms. is involved: eTwinning. This online community has allowed Ms. Burkhardt and her pupils to develop the project "Does the earth have borders? Migration and Human-Rights". This project can be a rich topic to explore when interviewing Ms. Burkhardt, since it combines key educational demands, such as the use of digital technologies in the classroom and the development of intercultural competences. The material about the project and the school is in German, but we will use our mediation competences to make it available for all of us.
We will prepare a set of possible questions in this shared document. Right after the school visit, we will make a collaborative reflection that will be summarized in the same document.
One of the outputs of this study week will be a three-minute video where we will document the activities that are most significant for our professional development, as well as our reflection about them. This activity will be a collaborative effort and for that we will use the interactive tutorial 04 (video production).
Right on Monday we will start filming some excerpts from activities and we will continue to do so during the week. We can include excerpts from interviews, our reflections in front of the camera and images that capture our physical and intellectual journey. For this activity the French and Economy and Politics prospective teacher, Kyra Clausen, with offer us two workshops on Tuesday and Friday.
For ideas, film material, story board and more, we will use a shared folder.
You all have quite different interests and research projects. During the study week you will have space and time to present your research topic and talk about the steps you have made so far. On Monday, after the first school visit, we will head to the German National Library of Economics, where we will discuss your research ideas and challenges enjoying the fantastic view of the Baltic Sea. We will work on a shared document where we can write the four project titles, objectives, procedures, questions, etc. This activity will serve as a basis for the coaching session we will have on Thursday with Ms. Sabine Reisas, expert on research-based teaching. If you need to make interviews or pass on questionnaires during the week, do not hesitate to tell me and we will find the proper space for that.
On Wednesday we will have the opportunity to interview Nicole Stanislaus, in-service English and Latin teacher at the Jungmannschule Eckernförde. Ms. Stanislaus also works at the University of Kiel, where she gives seminars on advanced didactics to prospective English teachers. Following the same procedure of the first school visit, we will get prepared for this interview. For this purpose we will have a look at the school profile and will write our questions and interview key points on a shared document. A special aspect to consider for this interview is the double role and broad vision that Ms. Stanislaus has in her work as school teacher and teacher educator. We should take this aspect into consideration for our interview. Right after this conversation we will reflect on this activity and summarize the results of our discussion in the shared document.
In this section we will work with some ICT (information and communication technology) tools from the inventory developed by the ICT-REV project. We will explore possibilities and challenges that these digital resources bring to our different teaching contexts.
Tiina Kankkonen, German and Finnish in-service teacher at a school in Vaasa, Finland, will talk about the digital infrastructure at her school and the use of digital learning resources. "What do pupils see?, "what resources do they use?", "do exams need to be printed out?". This presentation will be followed by a discussion: how do digital technologies impact course design?, what objectives are followed by the use of digital technologies at school? (my translation from the conference's site).
During the study week we have a special event in Kiel: the Digital week (Digitale Woche). We will attend a presentation for teachers. Is is located in the Humboldt-Schule. This is an opportunity to see how digital technologies are included in a language classroom. The conference will be held in German, but the main ideas will be summarized in English especially for you. You can also ask questions in English during the discussion. We will get prepared for this event and write our reflections in this shared document.
On Wednesday we have the second school visit. After the first break we will head to the Ricarda-Huch-Schule, where Susanna Hönig, Spanish and French in-service teacher and teacher educator will receive us and open her classroom doors. We will observe a two-hour Spanish class with a group of beginners. Before that, Ms. Hönig will give us introductory information. We will dedicate some time to get prepared for this activity. We will have a look at the school profile and will discuss possible observation foci depending on our interests. We will document our preparation work and summarize our learning outcomes after the school visit here.
If the weather is favorable, on Thursday we will do a paddling tour. Kiel is the sailing city and this study week would not be complete without an activity that includes... water and sport! After lunch we will head to the train station, where we will take a train to Plön. We will walk to the canoe center and depart from there towards Kiel. It will take approximately 2,5 hours. We will get an special bag for our personal belongings. For this tour we should take something to eat and drink. In case of bad weather, we have an alternative: a visit to the Kiel Maritime Museum and a delicious cup of coffee with a piece of cake at Bakeliet Kaffee.
