FAQ

I don’t speak English. Can I record phrases for Project Euphonia in my native language?

Not quite yet. We hope to roll out our research to more languages in the future, but for now, participation is limited to speakers who can fluently read and speak English.

Can people of any age participate in this project?

Thank you for your interest in Project Euphonia. Unfortunately, we currently cannot accept speech samples from anyone under the age of 18. However, we’ve heard incredibly strong stories highlighting how children and young adults would benefit from being a part of Project Euphonia, so we’re actively exploring how we open up Project Euphonia to people of all ages.

How quickly will speech recognition work better for me?

We understand that current speech recognition technology can be frustrating for you. However, Project Euphonia is still in the early stages of a potentially long research arc. We hope our research leads to product improvements that help your day to day life as soon as possible, but realistically this may still be a few years out.

How long does it take to record the phrases?

The initial phrase set will contain 30 phrases, and takes 5-10 minutes to record. The full phrase set contains about 1500 phrases, and may take 4-7 hours. You do not need to record these in one sitting. All phrases will be saved, and you can always pick up where you left off.

Will I receive any compensation for the time I spend?

Yes! You will receive a $150 gift card for every full list of about 1500 phrases that you record.

How can I get in touch with the Euphonia team if I have questions or issues?

We’d love to hear from you at euphonia-project@google.com and will respond as quickly as we can! Press inquiries can be directed to press@google.com

What information other than my voice recordings do you need from me?

We only need you to fill out the information requested in our interest form: bit.ly/AudioData. Most of it is optional, except your email address (so we can contact you) and the country where you reside (for legal reasons). Also, we need both details to give you rewards as you make progress recording phrases.

Why do you need my email address?

We need to be able to contact you directly, troubleshoot any issues with you, and send you rewards. You can ask us to remove your email address from our records and make your voice recordings anonymous at any time.

Can I access the voice recordings?

Yes! You can ask us for your voice recordings at any time. We will share them with you in Google Drive. Email us at euphonia-project@google to request this.

Who can access my voice samples?

Only Google employees and affiliates working on Project Euphonia will have access to your recordings. Your recordings will not be available to anyone else unless you give us explicit permission.

What kind of phrases will I be asked to record?

Our tasks are focused on specific use cases, such as when you are using an assistive tool like Google Home or Assistant, or having a conversation with a loved one. For people who are done with the full phrase set of ~1500 phrases, we also provide a more diverse set of phrases (including movie quotes). All the words are carefully selected to propel our research forward, and so the more speech samples we get from each participant, the better.

Can I see what the tool to record phrases looks like?

Yes, the tool we use is called ChitChat. There is a video in the "Get Help" section that demonstrates how to use this tool.
