I Am Professor Robert Anthony Ward, and here is a little about me:
NAME: Robert Anthony Ward
SCHOOL(S): Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences
DEPARTMENT(S): Cook Family Writing Program/ Black Studies
I am a Weinberg College Adviser and Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Cook Family Writing Program and the Black Studies Department at Northwestern University. A proud Detroit native and first-generation college student, my academic journey took me from the renowned Cass Technical High School to earning my M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies at the University of Illinois. These experiences shaped my deep commitment to mentorship and equity in education.
My research explores the intersections of race, market forces, and educational reform, with a focus on how school privatization affects high-need communities in post-Katrina New Orleans. Grounded in critical race theory and qualitative inquiry, my teaching and advising philosophy centers on empowering lifelong learners to challenge systemic inequality through pedagogy and reflection.
My scholarly mission is rooted in a view of education as a site of knowledge production, power, and social transformation. I approach both teaching and advising as pathways to empowerment, positioning students not as passive recipients of information, but as active agents in constructing meaning and understanding. This approach is informed by my research, which holds that knowledge is never culturally or politically neutral — that power is always embedded in the relationships that shape how we live, learn, and make sense of the world.
