I am Emeritus Professor of Economic Geography at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) and Adjunct Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. My research is fundamentally transdisciplinary, bridging the fields of economic geography and regional science through advanced spatial statistics, econometrics, and computational methods.

Academic Leadership & Editorial Impact

• Journal of Geographical Systems: Co-founder and Editor-in-Chief (since 1993). This journal is a leading outlet for the interface of statistical modeling and spatial issues.

• Advances in Spatial Science: Co-founder of this flagship book series (1995).

• International Geographical Union: Served as Chairman of the IGU-Commission on Mathematical Models (1988–1996), fostering global research networks across four continents.

• Global Appointments: Previous roles at the University of Vienna, University of California at Santa Barbara, and the Oskar Lange Academy of Economics.

• Founder’s Medal (RSAI, 2016): Awarded for significant lifelong contributions to Regional Science.

• Jean Paelinck Award (RSAI, 2015): For outstanding scholarly achievements in Regional Science Methods.

• EIB-European Prize in Regional Science (2012): For excellence in Spatial Economics.

• Academy Memberships: Foreign Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Associate Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and Fellow of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences.
