Prof. Alan Wan is Chair Professor of Business Statistics and University's Associate Provost of Academic Affairs at the City University of Hong Kong. Alan is a member of the Department of Decision Analytics and Operations, where he was previously Department Head. Alan belongs to the Business Statistics group of his department, which comprises two functional groups, the other being the Operations Research/Operations Management group. He is also an affiliate member of the university's Department of Data Science and Department of Biostatistics.
Alan was born in Hong Kong, but moved to Australia during his teens and studied at the University of Sydney, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree. From Australia he went across the Tasman to New Zealand, where he completed a Master and a Ph.D in Econometrics under the co-advisory of David Giles and Judith Clarke at the University of Canterbury. A paper from Alan's Ph.D thesis was awarded the inaugural A.R. Bergstrom Prize in Econometrics, a prize open to New Zealanders under the age of 26. He then went back to Australia and taught in the then Department of Econometrics at the University of New South Wales for two years before returning to his native Hong Kong. Between 2010 and 2013, he was an Adjunct Professor in the School of Statistics and Management, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
He received the Applied Research Excellence Award and the President's Award (校長持別嘉許獎) from the City University of Hong Kong, in 2001 and 2016 respectively.
In addition to his role at the City University of Hong Kong, Alan currently serves as a member of the Assessment Panel for Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Local Self-Financing Degree Sector of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong, and holds editorial positions with several academic journals (see below). He has served as a panel judge of the prestigious Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Award of the American Statistical Association, President of the Hong Kong Statistical Society, and an External Academic Advisor for the School of Science and Technology of the Hong Kong Metropolitan University.
Alan was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics & Its Applications (IMA), U.K., in 2023.
Alan Wan's research area lies in the interface between Econometrics and Statistics. The subjects of his current research include model averaging and selection, distributed inference, missing and censored data analysis, varying-coefficient models, and pre-test and shrinkage estimation. He has been successful in obtaining external research funding from the Australian Research Council, the British Academy, the Hong Kong Research Grants Council, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
He has edited 1 book, contributed 2 book chapters, and published 106 refereed journal articles. His research has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrics, Journal of Econometrics, Econometric Theory, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Jourmal of Machine Learning Research, and INFORMS Journal on Computing.
