My full official name is Md Zahidul Islam, though I am commonly known as Zahid Islam. I am a Professor of Computer Science and have served as the Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Business, Justice and Behavioural Sciences (FOBJBS) at Charles Sturt University since September 2023. In my current role, I remain actively engaged in research leadership and strategic initiatives within the University, particularly in FOBJBS.
I previously served as the Charles Sturt University Academic Lead to the Cyber Security CRC and as a Theme Lead within the CRC, holding both roles from January 2021 to September 2023. I was also the Director of the Data Science and Engineering Research Unit (DSERU) at CSU from January 2019 to September 2023. DSERU is the research arm of the School of Computing, Mathematics and Engineering, encompassing all academic staff in the School. During my tenure as Director, CSU senior management made the decision to establish the AI and Cyber Futures Institute in 2022. Prior to these roles, I held several other research leadership positions, including founding Group Leader of the Data Mining Research Group and Deputy Director of DSERU.
My personal research focuses on developing efficient, secure, and intelligent data mining algorithms and applying them across various domains, including cybersecurity, health informatics, precision agriculture, and social systems. I supervise/co-supervise a large cohort of HDR students and collaborate nationally and internationally on multidisciplinary research projects.
I have co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Services Computing, ACM Computing Surveys, Pattern Recognition, Information Sciences, Information Systems, PAKDD, and IJCNN. I have contributed to over $11 million in external research funding as a co-recipient on more than 25 competitive grants. Notably, a project funded by NSW Health received an Innovation Award in 2017 from the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation, and another project funded by the Cyber Security CRC and Quintessence Lab received the Cyber Security Researcher of the Year Award in 2021 from the Australian Information Security Association (AISA).
Internationally, I have been ranked #2 in Australia for Decision Trees, #17 for Data Mining, and placed among the top 1.18% of over 29 million researchers worldwide by ScholarGPS. I have also been listed in the 2024 Stanford University - Elsevier World Top 2% Scientists.
My academic background includes a BSc in Civil Engineering from Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Bangladesh; a Graduate Diploma in Information Science from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia; and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Newcastle, Australia, with a focus on Privacy-Preserving Data Mining.
