Michael's teaching and research interests include state and local government, campaigns and elections, and political philosophy.
He has authored, co-authored, or edited five books, including two in the past four years: Much Sound and Fury or the New Jim Crow (SUNY 2022), and Reform and Reaction, the Arc of Kansas Politics (co-edited with H. Edward Flentje), now available from the University Press of Kansas.
Michael writes a regular newspaper column as part of the Insight Kansas group, appears frequently on television and radio in Kansas and Western Missouri, and has published several journal articles. He has served as an expert witness in four court cases.
