Sergiy Mykolayovych Koval graduated from the Kharkiv Medical Institute with honors in 1978. From 1978 to 1980, he postgraduate study was at a clinical department at the Kharkiv Research Institute of Endocrinology and Hormone Chemistry.

In 1984 under the leadership of L.T. Malaya defended his PhD thesis "Content of endogenous prostaglandins in venous blood plasma during myocardial infarction in patients with diabetes."

In 1994, he defended his doctoral thesis "Risk factors, humoral and cellular disorders in the pathogenesis of hypertension in young people (clinical and epidemiological study)".

He worked at the Institute from 1982 to 1984 as a Junior Researcher of the Department. From 1985 to 1991, he worked as the Head of the Laboratory of epidemiology and prevention of arterial hypertension. Since 1991, he has been appointed as a Senior Researcher, since 1992 - as a Leading Researcher in the Department of arterial hypertension and nephrology.

Since 1996, he has been working as the Head of the Department of arterial hypertension and prevention of its complications.

In 1999, he received the scientific title of Professor. Since 2000, he has been a cardiologist of the highest category.

Kind of activity: scientific and clinical work in the field of cardiology and internal diseases.

Trained 13 PhD in medical sciences (from the specialty "Cardiology" - 7, "Internal diseases" - 4, "Psychiatry" - 1, "Cryobiology and cryomedicine" - 1).

He participated with reports in more than 40 international conferences and congresses held by the European societies of cardiologists, hypertensive specialists, specialists in heart failure, atherosclerosis and rhythm disorders. S.M. Koval - a member of the editorial board of the international journal Biological Markers and Guided Therapy, the editorial board of the "Zaporizhia Medical Journal" (included in the Web of Science scientometric database), the editorial board of the "Arterial Hypertension" journal, the editorial board of the "Ukrainian Therapeutic Journal"; Journal "Pathology" (professional scientific publication of Ukraine, which is indexed in bibliographic databases and included in the scientometric database of Web of Science); Journal "Problems of Endocrine Pathology" (professional scientific publication of Ukraine, which is indexed in bibliographic databases and included in the SCOPUS scientometric database - quartile Q-4); Arterial hypertension" (professional scientific publication of Ukraine); 4. Biological Markers and Guided Therapy (Hikari Ltd.) (a foreign scientific publication indexed in bibliographic databases).

Member of the Board of the Association of Cardiology of  Ukraine,  member of  Ukrainian antihypertensive society, member of  Association of  preventive medicine of  Ukraine, member of  anti-aging association of  Ukraine, Professional member of  European  Society of  Cardiology, member European  Society of  Hypertension.

Medal of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine named after academician M.D. Strazhesko, Badge of Honor "For Merit" of the Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine. Honorary Diplomas of the Kharkiv Mayor, Sign and Honorary Diploma of the Kharkiv Regional Council.

Author of 565 publications (National - 470, International – 95) and  37 patents, co-author of 6 monographs.
