Drilling a hole in concrete is a useful and practical technique. You can assemble shelves, hang boxes, install lights and do any repair work. Continue reading to learn how to drill.
1. Buy or rent a good drill. It is important that you have a good drill. The features you should have include:
2. Learn to use the drill. Read the user manual. Learn the function of each knob and control, as well as to configure the tool. Make sure you feel comfortable with the drill before going to the next step.
3. Adjusts the depth. Some drills will have a depth adjustment or a depth control bar, so read the user manual and learn how to use it. If yours does not have it, measure and mark the desired depth with a pencil or masking tape.
4. Hold the drill properly. Hold it with one hand, like a pistol, and place your index finger on the "trigger". If the drill has a handle for your other hand, use it. Otherwise, put your other hand on the back.
5. Make a mark on the drill location. With a pencil, mark the point on the wall you want to drill. Mark it with a dot or a small blade. Make sure your brand is not too big. Place the drill in the mark. Apply enough pressure to keep it at that point, but do not pressure it too much. With practice, you will learn the appropriate amount of pressure. Drill using a low speed (if the tool has a speed control) or short strokes (if it does not have a control). Make a shallow hole that guides the drill to make the hole just in the mark.
6. Drill. Use a high speed and impact function (if your drill counts on it), and drill into the shallow hole you did in the previous step. You will have to apply some force against the wall, especially if the drill is a low power. If your drill does not have an automatic impact function, remove it a little and press it again about every 10 seconds. If the drill is slow to drill, periodically remove it and allow it to cool for a few seconds. Stop after reaching the desired depth.
7. Solve problems. Sometimes a drill is not working as expected. You could hit a "beam" or a piece of very hard concrete. In these cases, you must insert a masonry nail into the hole and hammer it. This will help break the concrete. Then reinsert the drill and continue drilling.
