Privacy Policy for Rewind for Messenger
Last updated: October 28, 2026
Rewind for Messenger helps you see messages and images in Facebook Messenger (on the web) that were deleted or edited.
What it processes
While you have Facebook Messenger open in your browser, the extension reads the messages and images that the page displays to you (message text, the sender name as displayed, edited/deleted state, and images) in order to keep a copy.
Where it is stored
Only on your own device, in browser storage that belongs to this extension (IndexedDB), plus your settings. Nothing is uploaded.
What it never does
It does not send any data to the developer or to any third party. It has no server, no accounts, no analytics, no telemetry, no advertising, and does not load or run remote code. Images are fetched only from Facebook's own image servers (the same ones your page already loaded) to make a local compressed copy. It does not read the message composer, contacts, profile data, or anything outside the conversation messages. End-to-end encrypted chats are not decrypted or bypassed: the extension only reads text that your browser has already decrypted and displayed to you.
Notifications
If enabled (default), the extension shows a desktop notification with the sender's name and a short preview of the deleted or edited message. The preview is generated locally and shown only on your device. You can turn notifications off in the extension popup.
Your control
You can pause recording, exclude individual chats, limit the image cache size, automatically delete data after 30, 90 or 365 days, export your data, remove single entries, and delete all stored data at any time from the extension. Removing the extension deletes its stored data.
Other people's messages
Conversations include other people. Data from them is stored only on your device, as it was shown to you. Please use the extension in line with applicable laws and the expectations of the people you chat with.
Not affiliated
Rewind for Messenger is an independent project and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Meta Platforms, Inc. Facebook and Messenger are trademarks of Meta Platforms, Inc.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date above will be updated and the change will ship with the extension update.
