Privacy Policy for BlueChat
Last updated: July 12, 2026
Overview
BlueChat ("the App") is an offline, Bluetooth-only messenger for Android. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what data the App handles and how it is used. In short: BlueChat has no servers, no user accounts, and no internet access. Your data stays on your device and travels only directly between you and the people you choose to chat with, over Bluetooth.
Data Collection
The App does NOT collect, store, or transmit any personal data to our servers, because there are no servers. Your profile, contacts, and messages are stored locally on your device only. We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking, or crash-reporting services.
Profile Information
You provide a display name (required), an optional "about"/status text, and an optional profile photo. Because BlueChat is peer-to-peer, your display name is broadcast over Bluetooth so nearby BlueChat users can see who is requesting to connect. Choose a name you are comfortable sharing with people nearby.
Messages and Contacts
Messages, conversations, group memberships, and the contacts you connect with (their display name, "about," profile thumbnail, and public key) are stored locally on your device so your chats persist. Voice messages and media attachments you record or send are stored as files on your device.
Encryption
Connecting requires mutual consent: messaging only unlocks after the recipient accepts your connection request. Messages are end-to-end encrypted using an X25519 key exchange and AES-256-GCM encryption, and are transmitted directly between devices over Bluetooth. Each device generates a long-lived cryptographic identity key on first launch; the private key is stored on the device and protected using the Android Keystore.
Network Requests
The App makes no network requests. It does not request the Internet permission and never sends your content to any server or third party.
Permissions
BlueChat only requests permissions needed for its on-device functionality: Bluetooth (to discover nearby users and exchange messages), Location on Android 11 and older (required by the operating system to perform any Bluetooth scan — BlueChat does not collect or use your physical location), Microphone (only when you record a voice message), Notifications (to alert you to new messages and requests), and background/startup permissions (to stay discoverable and receive messages in the background and after a reboot).
Data Storage
All user data is stored locally on your device. No data is backed up to or synced with any external server. Automatic system (cloud) backup of app data is disabled. Data remains until you delete it (by deleting a conversation, clearing app data, or uninstalling the App).
Backups and Exports
The App can export your chats to a file only when you initiate it, to a location you choose. This export is not encrypted and is not uploaded anywhere. If you save it to a cloud-synced folder or share the file, its contents become subject to that destination's handling. Keep exported files somewhere secure.
Third-Party Services
The App does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or data services. Data you send in a chat is shared only with the specific peer(s) you communicate with, directly over Bluetooth.
Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from children (and, as noted, we do not collect personal data from anyone).
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected with an updated date at the top.
