Prince of Persia Classic still counts down the minutes until The Princess has to choose her fate, but instead of getting a "Game Over" screen when an hour has passed like in the original, you can now keep playing. You can still save the princess, too, though you get a slightly different ending if you beat the game in under an hour. Also making the game more forgiving, and as a result, more enjoyable, is the addition of a checkpoint on each level. Once you've reached the checkpoint you can start from there if you die, but know that the clock keeps ticking and doesn't reset to the original time when you hit the checkpoint. For anyone who isn't used to older games that simply drop you into the proceedings armed only with a "Good luck!" a glowing Tinkerbell-style sprite that points out where you need to go next is a nice addition. You can turn this assistance off if you wish.

The only thing that's disappointing about this version of Prince of Persia is that the original game doesn't appear to be part of the package. Sure, its punishing difficulty might not hold up all that well today, but its inclusion would have been nice, if only to show how great of a job Gameloft did on Prince of Persia Classic. Other developers should take note: This is how you bring a classic game to a downloadable service.

The PS3 and X360 versions of the game use a 3D engine and the levels are often viewed from an angle, giving the game a 3D feel while still being a classic 2D puzzle-platformer. However, the version for mobile devices (Android, iPad, iPhone) is developed with a 2-dimensional engine, so backgrounds and other elements of the levels are completely static. However, this version keeps all the elements introduced in the console version (3D cutscenes, butterfly that helps navigate etc.)

Chalk me up as one Xbox Live Arcade gamer that was quickly losing faith in the whole concept. Deluged with sub-par, decades-old arcade shovelware, it was getting difficult to greet any classic re-release with anything than the full 800 points' worth of contempt and despair. But perhaps things are changing. Prince of Persia Classic is a 51MB-sized slice of redemption - a comprehensive remake that honours Jordan Mechner's brilliant concept by injecting its timeless appeal into a modern-looking, highly entertaining game that's well worth its diminutive price tag.

These new game variations form the backbone of the game's longevity once you've completed it. Time Attack is well in keeping with the game's roots. Played out in real time, the 1989 original gave you one hour to rescue the princess before she was executed by the evil Grand Vizier Jaffar. This limitation is all-but gone in general gameplay, but it's the cornerstone of Time Attack - clich it may be, but it is a race against the clock and the game thoughtfully gives you a ghost of your best performance to compete against should you so wish. My only criticism here is the inability to share ghosts, or download the best performances per level from Live.

It's all good news. Games like Prince of Persia and the PlayStation Store's forthcoming Super Stardust HD are strong evidence that classic gaming is finally getting the respect it deserves. Gameloft is to be congratulated and rewarded with millions of our Microsoft points for a remake that beautifully celebrates a genuine gaming legend. Add it to your Live Arcade collection alongside Jetpac Refuelled, Geometry Wars and Pac-Man Championship Edition as the most essential examples of 'retro evolved'.

The popularity of these HD collections is making me realize just how awesome some of the games from last generation truly were. God of War, Sly Cooper and Tomb Raider have all given gamers a chance to experience these classics in a new light. Ubisoft is now joining the fray with the Prince of Persia trilogy. Released entirely during the PS2/Xbox days, this trilogy is one of the best platforming experiences of the last decade, and truly much better than the previous efforts in the series. If you missed these games the first go-around, you now have no excuse not to enjoy them.

Jump and roll, take an adventure all the way, and overcome the ultimate difficulty. In the game, the player will play the role of a prince, travel through crisis-ridden dungeons, defeat well-trained guards, and rescue the princess who was forced to marry the devil.

The game also provides two brand new modes: timing mode and survival mode. In the timing mode, you must escape the dungeon within 60 minutes, defeat Jafar and his lackeys and rescue the princess. In survival mode, you only have 60 minutes, but you can't die even once before you rescue the princess. The game also draws on the elements of time backwards in the 2003 version. In the game, you can resurrect the princess by reversing time and space.

Mount Qaf is filled with varied locations and multiple diverse biomes, like the Lower City and Autumnal Forest. The former is based around the urban and religious architecture of the Achaemenid and Sasanian empires, while the latter is inspired by Iran's Hyrcanian Forests.
