Chalk me up as one Xbox Live Arcade gamer that was quickly losing faith in the whole concept. Deluged with sub-par, decades-old arcade shovelware, it was getting difficult to greet any classic re-release with anything than the full 800 points' worth of contempt and despair. But perhaps things are changing. Prince of Persia Classic is a 51MB-sized slice of redemption - a comprehensive remake that honours Jordan Mechner's brilliant concept by injecting its timeless appeal into a modern-looking, highly entertaining game that's well worth its diminutive price tag.

It's all good news. Games like Prince of Persia and the PlayStation Store's forthcoming Super Stardust HD are strong evidence that classic gaming is finally getting the respect it deserves. Gameloft is to be congratulated and rewarded with millions of our Microsoft points for a remake that beautifully celebrates a genuine gaming legend. Add it to your Live Arcade collection alongside Jetpac Refuelled, Geometry Wars and Pac-Man Championship Edition as the most essential examples of 'retro evolved'.

Anyway, I hope both this and the upcoming high-definition remake of Super Street Fighter 2 will start a trend for more HD remakes of popular classic. (Forum topic: Which Games Would You Like To See Remade in HD?)

Another interesting news story for you all, as we have just been told through twitter, that the all time classic platformer of 'Prince of Persia'; a game which has been released for many different systems back in 1989 by Broderbund and a more recent high quality Atari XL/XE port that was featured on Indie Retro News last year, has been made available as a Unity remake for both Windows and MAC by HoussamChab.

Prince of Persia is not only a game that featured lots of well designed platforming levels, but the game was full of danger as you must be careful not to fall through loose floors, get hit by sword wielding guards, crushed by gates or at worst skewered in blood on deadly spikes. So yes if you remember playing that classic game in 1989, it might be worth trying out this remake which is available to download below from HoussamChab.

The listings, which had the remake pegged for a November release, have since been removed, but they were originally spotted by Ken Xyro on Twitter, who grabbed a couple of screenshots before they were gone. Although the logo resembles the well-remembered 2008 cel-shaded remake, this may actually be a remake of the classic, 1989 platformer.

The version released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC follows the prince being sent to the kingdom of his older brother, Malik, but finds it under siege. They seem to be close and equally snarky, but retconning a brother into the timeline feels shoehorned in. Anyway, Malik is losing the battle and unleashes an ancient evil, more exaclty a djinn by the name of Ratash, who kills people indiscriminately and possesses him. The prince is now forced to race after him through the imperial palace, with the help of Razia, another djinn. During the game, the prince unlocks four powers, based on the version of the sands available in this game, like the classic rewind, which has a new twist, being able to also rewind delapidated portions of the environment without turning back time, the ability to freeze water, for some reason and an air dash towards enemies. These are complemented by a new set of combat abilities, like a stone armor, a wind knockback, a fire trail and an ice wave. The funny thing is, there is no block in combat. Only dodges. But now you can jump on enemies and kick them, so it's something. Almost forgot to mention: there is also no option to slow down time. Back to the story:our hero is sent by Razia to get a magic sword from the forgotten (get it?) djinn city of Rakem. After bringing the sword back to her, she sacrifices herself and infuses her spirit with the sword to make a weapon that can potentially kill Ratash. After this task, the prince manages to eventually catch up to the evil djinn, whom he battles multiple times, and in the end he finishes the job, killing his brother in the process. The post-battle cutscene is a series of images with narration which tell us that the prince returned to Rakem to return the sword in Razia's memory and then went back to king Sharaman, his father, and explained what happened. All's well that ends well, but wasn't this game supposed to fill the blank between The Sands of Time and Warrior Within? Where is the bloody Dahaka?

It seems that the love being given to retro games is neverending these days, with old 8-bit classics being remade left and right. Games like the revamped Metal Gear & Alone in the Dark series, as well as the upcoming Bionic Commando redux, are only a few tiny fish in a growing sea of upgraded, flashier remakes.

Wow. A sultan? That's pretty dire.*

What the headline so clumsily tries to convey is that Ubisoft's snazzy, non-rotoscoped remake of 1989's Prince of Persia will finally arrive on the PlayStation Network this Thursday, October 23rd. Sporting modernized 3D graphics, new traps and the same perfectly-postured-princess-in-peril plot we've grown to love, Prince of Persia Classic is sure to awaken nostalgia while preparing you for the royal acrobat's next adventure -- unimaginatively dubbed Prince of Persia. With any luck, we'll be appending "classic" to it as well when it releases on December 2nd.

* And Farah-fetched. Still, much better than the original headline that Vizier a second ago.
