TITLE

A case study of Applied Mathematics in Cosmology: Imaging Functionals and the Dark Energy Riddle

ABSTRACT

The nature of dark energy is one of the fundamental problems in cosmology. Introduced to explain the apparent acceleration of the Universe's expansion, its origin remains to be determined. In this talk, we leisurely illustrate how applied mathematics may significantly impact understanding the relationship between dark energy and structure formation in the late-epoch Universe. We discuss how a variant of harmonic map Energy functional, used for image visualization, provides a powerful technique that may lead to an interpretative shift in the very nature of dark energy.
