Applications of conservation laws to traffic with obstacles and changing surface conditions

ABSTRACT
The talk will give an overview of recent results on the macroscopic modeling of traffic on roads where maintenance activities, accidents, or changes in the meteorological conditions may result in sudden changes in the road capacity and/or specific maximal velocity. The models we consider are described by hyperbolic conservation laws. The first part of the talk will be devoted to introducing the theoretical analysis tools needed to deal with these non-classical problems, while the second part will focus on the numerical approximation of solutions via finite-volume schemes.
