If you want a portable, intelligent charging solution with advanced battery health monitoring for flexible placement in parking garages, choose PRIMECOMTECH Level 2; if you need a high-output, permanent wall-mounted station that delivers maximum range per hour for a dedicated home or garage spot, choose EV Gear Level 2.
• PRIMECOMTECH Level 2: Strength lies in its smart chip technology and portability, but it trades off lower amperage (16A) compared to hardwired units. Best for drivers who prioritize battery longevity features and need a unit they can move between locations.
• EV Gear Level 2: Strength is its raw power output (40A) and robust wall-mounting design, but it lacks the active data communication found in the Primecom model. Best for drivers who want the fastest possible charge time and a fixed installation.
The PRIMECOMTECH Level 2 charger stands out primarily because of its internal "intelligent chip" architecture. Unlike standard chargers that simply dump current into your vehicle, this unit actively communicates with your car's onboard computer via the data connection port. It gathers six specific types of data, including ambient temperature, battery temperature, current battery level, and total battery capacity. The system then automatically adjusts the voltage to optimize the charging process. This isn't just about getting juice into the battery; it is about extending the life expectancy of that battery over the long term. If you drive an electric vehicle where battery degradation is a primary concern, this feature offers a tangible engineering advantage over basic charging stations.
In terms of physical design, this unit is built for flexibility. It comes with a 30-foot cable option, which provides ample reach for various parking scenarios. The unit is rated IP65, meaning it is protected against water jets and dust, making it safe for outdoor use in snow, rain, or dusty environments. It also carries UL Listed Cable Certifications and German Equipment Safety certifications, ensuring that the safety mechanisms like lightning protection, leakage protection, and overheat safeguards are rigorously tested.
This charger is ideal for someone who parks in a shared space, a multi-unit parking garage, or a driveway where they might not have a permanent electrical outlet installed nearby. Because it is portable and uses a NEMA 14-50 plug rather than being hardwired, you can unplug it and take it to a friend's house or a different location. However, you should skip this unit if you require maximum speed above all else. At 16 Amps and 3.84 kW/hour, it adds up to 15 miles of range per hour. While this is four times faster than a standard Level 1 outlet, it is half the speed of a 40 Amp station. If your goal is to add as much range as possible in the shortest amount of time while parked, this lower amperage might feel limiting.

The EV Gear Level 2 charger is engineered for one thing: speed and reliability at a fixed location. With a massive 40 Amp output at 240V, it pushes 9.7 kW/hour into compatible vehicles. This translates to adding up to 32 miles of range per hour of charging. For context, that is more than double the rate of the 16 Amp model. If you have a large battery pack and need to replenish your range quickly after a long day of driving, this output capacity is a game-changer. It is designed specifically for NEMA 14-50 outlets and is not compatible with three-phase 208V systems, so checking your electrical setup is crucial before purchase.
Durability and installation are central to the EV Gear design philosophy. The control box is rated IP66, which offers a higher level of protection against water ingress and dust compared to the IP65 rating on the Primecom unit. It comes complete with an EZ wall-mounting plate and screws, turning your garage wall into a dedicated charging hub. The package includes a clip-dock J1772 connector holster, keeping the heavy charging handle off the floor and preventing tripping hazards. Status indicators on the box provide clear visual feedback on power, connection, charging, and any faults, so you never have to guess what the machine is doing.
This product is perfect for homeowners or business owners who have a dedicated parking spot in a garage with a pre-installed NEMA 14-50 outlet. It is the choice for those who want a "set it and forget it" solution that requires no moving parts or carrying weight. You should avoid this unit if you frequently change parking locations or do not have a permanent outlet available, as the 25-foot cable is tethered to a fixed mount. Additionally, if you live in an area with older wiring that cannot support a 40 Amp load without upgrades, this unit may not be immediately usable without professional electrical work.
• Best for maximum charging speed → EV Gear Level 2 (40 Amp / 32 miles per hour).
• Best for battery health optimization → PRIMECOMTECH Level 2 (Intelligent chip adjusts voltage based on battery data).
• Best for portability → PRIMECOMTECH Level 2 (Lighter weight, easy to carry, no permanent mount required).
• Best for fixed installations → EV Gear Level 2 (Includes wall-mounting plate and holster for tidy storage).
• Best for weather resistance → EV Gear Level 2 (IP66 rating vs IP65).
• Best for flexible cable length needs → PRIMECOMTECH Level 2 (Offers 30, 40, and 50-foot options).
• Best for simple status monitoring → EV Gear Level 2 (Dedicated LEDs for power, connection, and fault states).
• Best for shared or temporary parking spots → PRIMECOMTECH Level 2 (Designed to be moved between garages or homes).
For my own setup, I would choose the EV Gear Level 2 because I park in a single, dedicated spot in my garage every night. The sheer difference in speed—adding 32 miles of range versus 15—is too significant to ignore when I need to get back on the road quickly. The IP66 rating and the included wall-mounting kit give me confidence that this will be a permanent, reliable fixture in my home. However, if I were living in an apartment complex with a designated parking garage where I could not install a permanent wall mount, I would switch to the PRIMECOMTECH Level 2. Its ability to move with me and its focus on protecting the battery through smart voltage adjustment makes it the superior choice for parking garages where flexibility is king.
Both units operate quietly as they are solid-state electronic devices, but the EV Gear unit runs at a higher wattage (9.7 kW), which may generate slightly more heat than the 3.84 kW Primecom unit, though both include cooling protections.
No, the PRIMECOMTECH Level 2 operates within an automatic range of 100V-240V, but the EV Gear Level 2 explicitly notes it is not compatible with 3-phase 208V systems. Always check your specific electrical supply against the manufacturer's requirements.
The EV Gear Level 2 holds a slight edge with an IP66 rating for its control box compared to the PRIMECOMTECH Level 2's IP65 rating, offering enhanced protection against powerful water jets and total dust immunity.
No, both units come with integrated cables; the PRIMECOMTECH offers lengths of 30, 40, or 50 feet depending on the model selected, while the EV Gear comes standard with a 25-foot cable.
