The Geological Context

The poles flipped. The shield vanished. To a geologist, 42,000 years is a blink of an eye. To the life on Earth at the time, it was an eternity of exposure; 30 generations of ancient mankind.
During the Laschamps Excursion, Earth's magnetic field—our planetary shield against solar & cosmic radiation—didn't just drift; it collapsed to less than 6% of its current strength. For a brief window in deep time, North became South, and the protective bubble that keeps our atmosphere safe evaporated. AKA the Adams Event (or Adams Transitional Geomagnetic Event) as a nod to science fiction author Douglas Adams, because the major magnetic field collapse and associated climate chaos occurred around 42,000 years ago, the same time Adams' book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy famously identifies "42" as the answer to life, the universe, and everything!

(The Atmosphere as a Plasma Tube)
A Global Auroral Storm. Without a magnetic field to funnel solar wind to the poles, the Aurora Borealis didn't just stay in the Arctic. It descended.
Imagine a sky on fire. With no shield to deflect the solar stream, the entire atmosphere effectively became a Giant TICP Discharge Tube.
Cosmic Rays: Bombarded the surface (confirmed by spikes in Beryllium-10 isotopes in Tasmanian sediment cores).
The Visuals: Intense, chaotic plasma sheets visible at the Equator.

The Geologist's Note
"The Rock Remembers." We know this happened because the Earth kept a receipt. In sediment cores from Lake Selina, Tasmania, we found the magnetic particles confused, pointing in the wrong direction, locked in mud layers dated to the exact moment the shield fell.
As a Hydrogeologist, I read these cores. As a Plasma Scientist & Artist, I recreate the conditions.
While Laschamps is the most significant and well-studied recent event, there have been other proposed excursions since then:
The Mono Lake Excursion (~33,000 – 34,000 years ago): This is the most widely recognized event after Laschamps. It was first identified in the sediments of Mono Lake, California. It was a rapid fluctuation where the field intensity dropped and the pole moved towards the equator, but it may not have been a complete 180° flip like Laschamps.
The Gothenburg Flip (~12,000 – 13,000 years ago): This is much more controversial. Some sediment data from Sweden suggests a rapid excursion right at the end of the Pleistocene (near the Younger Dryas boundary), but it is not universally accepted in the geological community as a global event. It may have been a local magnetic anomaly or a sedimentary error.
Sterno-Etrussia Excursion (~2,700 years ago): Another debated event, proposed based on archaeomagnetic data (pottery kilns) in Europe. It suggests a rapid spike in field curvature, but again, likely not a full planetary reversal.
