The purpose of this study is to see if historical trauma in African American women affects birth
outcomes. Minority women in America, and in Rock County in particular, are far more likely to
experience a bad birth outcome than white women. This study will gather information about how
historical trauma (trauma that has been passed down through generations) could be impacting the
current disparity in birth outcomes. Each participant will be asked to complete two surveys, one
about their previous births and one called the African American Historical Trauma Questionnaire
which asks questions about how racism now and in the past has impacted their family.
