If you want a versatile recording and production setup for commuting between creative spaces, choose PreSonus Quantum ES 4; if you need lightweight, open-back headphones for listening, choose GRADO Classic Series SR80.
These products solve different problems: one is a multi-input USB-C audio interface bundled with headphones, while the other is a pair of wired listening headphones. For commuting, the key question is whether you need recording connections and routing or simply a headphone listening experience.
PreSonus Quantum ES 4 vs GRADO Classic Series SR80 at a Glance
• GRADO Classic Series SR80’s strength: Lightweight, wired, open-back headphones designed for natural, spacious home listening. Trade-off: Open-back construction offers no noise control and is less suited to noisy commutes.
• PreSonus is for: Musicians, producers, and creators who need to connect microphones or instruments and manage audio.
• GRADO is for: Listeners who want over-ear headphones for detailed, engaging listening in a quieter setting.
The Quantum ES 4 is a desktop USB-C audio interface for recording and managing sound, rather than a conventional set of headphones. It has four mic preamps, with up to 75 dB of gain, plus mic, line, and Hi-Z input support. That makes it relevant to a creator connecting microphones, instruments, or other line-level gear instead of someone who only wants to listen to music on a commute.
Its 32-bit / 192 kHz conversion specification and DSP monitor mixer with loopback point to a setup built for recording, monitoring, and routing audio. The listed connections include ADAT and S/PDIF I/O, alongside two reamp outputs, ten line outputs, and two headphone outputs. For a small studio or a mobile creative setup that moves between a computer and a compatible phone or tablet, those options offer more flexibility than a simple headphone connection.
The bundle includes Polsen closed-back studio monitor headphones and XLR cables, so it gives a buyer useful pieces for a recording setup. Still, the main product is the interface, and it needs compatible equipment to do its job. Skip it if you only want headphones for everyday listening or need a simple, noise-isolating commuting solution. Its many inputs and outputs matter most when you will actually connect and manage audio gear.
The SR80 is a pair of wired, over-ear headphones with an open-back design. Its stated strengths are a spacious listening presentation, clear vocals, detailed highs, and an energetic sound. That makes it a more direct choice than the PreSonus if your goal is listening rather than recording or routing audio.

The open-back design is the defining trade-off. It lets sound move more freely, which is intended to create a natural sense of space and separation between instruments. But the SR80 has no noise control, so it is not designed to block outside sounds. On a train, bus, or busy street, that means the environment can compete with what you are listening to, and people nearby may also hear some of your audio.
The SR80 uses a 3.5 mm mini jack with a 1/4-inch adapter and has a wired connection. Its lightweight design and flexible cable are described as suited to longer listening sessions, while its over-ear format is positioned for home use. Skip it if you need noise control for commuting, wireless operation, or recording inputs. It fits a listener who values open, lively sound and typically listens in a quieter place.
• Best for recording microphones → PreSonus Quantum ES 4. It has four mic preamps and supports mic, line, and Hi-Z input types.
• Best for a straightforward headphone purchase → GRADO Classic Series SR80. It is a wired over-ear headphone, not an audio interface that requires other gear to serve its main purpose.
• Best for connecting instruments → PreSonus Quantum ES 4. Its front-facing instrument inputs and Hi-Z support suit guitar or bass recording.
• Best for spacious home listening → GRADO Classic Series SR80. Its open-back construction is intended to create a natural, open presentation.
• Best for managing several audio connections → PreSonus Quantum ES 4. Its listed ADAT, S/PDIF, reamp, line, and headphone outputs offer connection options for a production setup.
• Best for a quiet room and detailed music listening → GRADO Classic Series SR80. Its sound is described as lively, with clear vocals and detailed highs.
• Better fit for a noisy commute → Neither is an obvious match. The SR80 has no noise control, and the PreSonus bundle is centered on a desktop interface rather than commute-focused headphones.
• Best for a creator using a computer or compatible mobile device → PreSonus Quantum ES 4. It supports Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android connections through USB-C.
Before choosing, decide whether you need a listening device or a recording hub. The products are not direct substitutes. The SR80 connects to an audio source through its headphone cable; the Quantum ES 4 connects microphones, instruments, and other audio equipment to a computer or compatible mobile device. The included Polsen headphones make the PreSonus bundle more useful as a starter recording package, but they do not turn the interface into a commute-oriented headphone product.
For commuting, an open-back headphone design is a meaningful limitation. The SR80 is designed for home listening, and its lack of noise control gives it a weaker fit for buses, trains, and other loud surroundings. If you are searching for the best ear clip headphones for commuting or in ear headphones for commuting, neither listed product matches those form factors. The GRADO is over-ear; the PreSonus is an interface bundle.
Likewise, neither product is a clear answer to someone looking for the best long battery life headband headphones for commuting. The SR80 is wired, and the Quantum ES 4 is a USB-C audio interface rather than a battery-powered headphone set. Neither data sheet lists battery life. Don’t assume either is intended for wireless, all-day travel just because one product includes headphones.
The practical difference is also about setup. The Quantum ES 4 makes sense if you want to record or route audio and can use its inputs and outputs. The SR80 makes sense if you want to listen through wired headphones and prefer the open-back character. If your priority is blocking ambient noise, the SR80’s stated design points in the opposite direction. If your priority is simple music playback, the interface’s extensive connections may be unnecessary.
In my opinion, I would choose the PreSonus Quantum ES 4 if I needed a recording hub with multiple inputs and outputs, but I would not buy it as a commuting headphone solution. For commuting, I would not choose the GRADO SR80 either: its open-back design and lack of noise control are better suited to home listening. Between these two, my pick depends on the job: PreSonus for audio production, GRADO for open-back listening.
FAQ
No. It is a USB-C audio interface with mic, line, and instrument input support, plus multiple audio outputs. The bundle includes Polsen closed-back monitor headphones, but the interface itself is the central product.
They are wired, open-back over-ear headphones with no noise control. Their design is described as optimized for home listening, so they are a poor fit if you need to reduce surrounding noise during a commute.
The PreSonus Quantum ES 4 is the relevant option for recording because it includes four mic preamps, Hi-Z support, and audio connections for instruments and other equipment. The GRADO SR80 is a listening headphone and does not provide recording inputs.
