A presentation for the Rochester Rotary Club during National Prevention Week, May, 2018
This presentation was adapted from a workshop I've designed and presented many times each semester, dubbed "Finance 101." It is a hands-on training for student leaders that take on the job or treasurer or accountant for their student organization. Training in this area was lacking within the region, so I broadened the scope of our UNH workshop to encompass national trends in student finance awareness & behavior, and then co-presented the information with some of our top student leaders who had become proficient in delivering the Finance 101 workshops.
This work explores recent research that supports the effective incorporation of experiential learning into curriculum, and strategies for developing coursework that includes a manageable, meaningful degree of desirable difficulty to enhance student learning.

I've facilitated and co-facilitated a lot of group learning activities. Many are in the context of Equine Assisted Learning, an area of experiential learning in which I've had extensive training outside of my academic pursuits. I am a certified Equine Specialist through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA), and in this role I often work alongside a certified social worker or psychologist to assist with individual and group activities that have specific learning objectives or therapeutic treatment goals. I have designed several student workshops using metaphors relating to their academic and co-curricular activities.
The purpose of the workshop series was to present topics that strengthened student leadership skills from the context of popular culture, history, art or science. This presentation contained an interactive component called "follow the herd," which demonstrated how different group members may have different strengths with regards to certain resources or talents essential to the larger group, and a reflective component that tied the activity back to their own group's current leadership challenges.
Guest Lecturer, ANSC 401 - Animals & Society (UNH) I designed two class presentations on very short notice when a regular professor was absent. There were about 30 students in this class, and my objective was to cover a wide span of culture and history and to connect students to prior learning via pictures, stories, and interactive group collaborations.
"Trait Variation & Genetic Implications due to Bias in One Sex" (Behavioral Ecology: ZOOL 833)
This lecture was accompanied by an interactive "recombination game," in which students each got a "gene card," had to pair off and see what combinations arose, some were eliminated by lethal gene combos, some got to recombine, etc. Students were very enthusiastic about the activity, and scored well on the final assessment.
