Age Level: 4 year old
Goal of Lesson: Have students learn the basics of binary code by making bracelets with secret messages.
Learning Skills: Binary Code (very basic), fine motor skills through beading beads through pipe cleaners.
Materials: pipe cleaners and beads
Set Up: Teacher separate colors of beads.
Basics to explain before starting.
In binary code each letter represents a number code.
-Binary Alphabet Code is the alphabet in binary using 8 beads per letter.
-Binary Alphabet Code Short Version shortens the codes to 5 beads per letter. This is helpful for younger children and longer codes.
1. Pick out a pipe cleaner and 2 or 3 different colors of beads.
2. Have students choose what color bead will represent the number 1 and which will represent the number 0. It is also helpful to have a third color bead to act as a space (optional).
3. Write out the message you want on your bracelet.
Examples (student's name, short words).
4. Use the binary code (attached to this lesson) to make your code. Bead beads, wrap and twist around wrist and enjoy!
