Learning Skills: Subtracting & adding numbers, patience, time management, learning about budget
Materials: Cardboard boxes, post it notes, play items to sell (toys, play food, etc.), markers/colors, sheets of paper, glue, scissors, Stickers
Making the Cash Register
1. Use any cardboard you may have.
- Size doesn’t matter.
- You may need more than one depending on how many will be acting as cashiers.
2. Cut the flaps and save them to create the dividers for where the money will go.
3. Divide the box into however many sections you need depending on the amount of numbers the class will be using.
*Recommended to use few small values to make it easier to manage when the shop open*
4. Cut the back and make the dividers shorter than the image below for better access to the money.
5. Based on the values chosen, write them behind the cash register so the students know exactly where each bill/coin is.
Making the Money (could also use play money)
1. Pass out 2-3 sheets of paper to each student.
2. You will start by grabbing one piece of paper and folding it once in “hotdog style” (vertical).
3. You will fold that same piece of paper in “hotdog style” (vertical) again.
4. Grab that same piece of paper and fold it once in “hamburger style” (horizontal) .
5. Unfold and cut where the creases are. Should get 8 rectangles if done correctly.
6. To make the coins, simply cut smaller squares of paper
7. Then write the value of the bill on front and back. The student can choose to decorate them with shapes if they want.
8. Ask each student for one bill/coin of each value, so they can distribute it into the cash register.
Items to "Sell"
1. Give play items varying prices for the students to "buy".
2. Make lists listing the items for sale and their price at each register for the cashier to know the values without leaving their station.
Time to Play!
1. Assign each student a number between 1and amounts of students in class.
2. Make a rotation which switches every so often so that each student gets to be a cashier once.
3. At the register there will be pencil and paper for calculating the totals and change of the customer.
4. Set a time limit for each round. Each student will go to the area where all the items are. From there they will pick what they want and go to the nearest register available.
5. They have to patiently wait their turn to get checked out but if time runs out those who have not been checked out have to return their item(s) and head back to their seats and get ready for the next round.
6. However if the student is getting checked, the cashier will tell them their total and the customer will give what they owe; if they don’t have the exact amount they should give a bigger bill to get change. They will then return to their seats.
7. After everyone has gone at the end and if some didn’t get a chance to purchase anything there will be a bonus round where the first group repeats while those students get a chance to pick one item and then go get checked out.
8. After they will return the play items back and clean up.
