Oh sorry, I think I am understanding you now. There must be an intrinsic interaction with how the operating system plays audio files via a Chrome browser. If there is no built in player or app with permissions to run the file without downloading it then it will fail in this scenario. I would imagine that if you saved the audio file as a video and uploaded it to Google Drive then you would be able to play it in line as Google Drive on the web has a built in video player but as far as I understand it, doesn't have a built in audio player.

[updated] Looking at these numbers, it is obvious that the audio delivery method an app uses by default is a big factor in how the user ultimately consumes the audio. Though it cannot be confirmed, one can assume most users stick with the default method that was given to them in the app.

UPDATE: I later remembered the above statement is not accurate. What was actually happening was that WEBM video was working fine, but it was WEBM audio that was causing the problem. YouTube uses Opus encoding for WEBM audio, which when youtube-dl tried merging the two files, it would end up having to use an MKV container rather than MP4 because ffmpeg doesn't safely allow WEBM/Opus within an MP4 container. In order to force this conversion you must add "--strict 2" to ffmpeg (can be passed in via a youtube-dl parameter). My solution was to exclude WEBM audio formats by using "bestaudio[ext=m4a]". Once I did this, all I simply needed to do was add "--merge-output-format mp4" to my youtube-dl command (as recommended by the marked answer).

I think his point is more about the error message and I would say strange display. Audio recordings of the desktop versions are in fact not displayed in the mobile version as an unknown unplayable file format (.webm). They are displayed as playable audio files incl. a full player interface. But if you press the play button within the player (of Evernote!) it gives this strange error message.
