Peter is currently a cardiology fellow and PhD candidate in Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology at UCLA. As part of the Specialty Training and Advanced Research (STAR) program, he used a multiscale approach to create a comprehensive atlas of how the cardiac autonomic nervous system controls the heartbeat.

For those unfamiliar, the advice and guidance system came about to try to ease pressure on the long outpatient waiting lists, providing a different way of managing some cases. It is in place for a number of specialties for primary care clinicians to ask questions to consultants, getting an answer that will help guide patient care within a matter of short weeks at most. We talk about the system and where it can fit in to make a difference to patient care. We take the opportunity to go through some common themes and glean learning points from these to help our own practice.

Heart failure has become one of the top subjects in modern cardiology. The reasons for this are not only due to an aging population but the many new management tools that have entered the clinical arena these last years. Also, older drugs have been re-evaluated and newer ones have paved the way for clinicians to better control heart function. Devices offer remarkable new paths to treatment, especially for severe cases that were, until recently, considered hopeless. All these new approaches require repeated follow-up offering a new and special role for the practicing cardiologists in their everyday consultation. In addition, a new cohort of patients is being seen, including those receiving chemotherapy for malignant diseases. Finally, in this new series of clinical adventures for the clinician, one should not forget the benefit of exercise training as a new approach to the treatment of heart failure: this, on top of its specific efficacy in the treatment itself, also improves the quality of life of the patients, allowing them to feel better and realise that they still have a future ahead of them.

The issue of Translational Pediatrics (TP) presents eight articles from Giessen & Frankfurt, Germany and Vienna, Austria representing the wide spectrum of pediatric cardiology. The aim of the authors is to exchange knowledge with the worldwide pediatric community in current topics of cardio-vascular diseases in children and adolescents by publishing their articles in TP as an open access. The authors are convinced, that the articles find the interest of the readers of TP, but not only of pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, intensivists, but even pediatricians and neonatologists, all responsible for improving further the care of young patients with cardiovascular disease.

Our research is divided into 4 broad themes: cardiac, cardiovascular data science, metabolic and vascular with our staff conducting world-leading research in a number of specialised fields within these themes. Cardiovascular disease continues to lead the way in complications and deaths among adults around the world. In developed countries, the incidence rate has decreased, while in developing countries, these rates are somewhat different. Numerous international studies are being carried out to improve the diagnosis, treatment and, most importantly, the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. As data accumulates, international recommendations are updated. It is safe to say that international treatment standards are applied in all countries. But there is a lot of work to be done to introduce innovative technologies in cardiology.

I believe that scientific and educational conferences with the exchange of opinions of specialists from different countries are positively reflected in the accumulation of experience in the fight against cardiovascular diseases.

Dear conference participants and colleagues, I am glad to welcome you to the international conference on cardiology. Cardiovascular diseases are still the main cause of complications and mortality in adults. Moreover, this global trend is observed in both developed and developing countries of the world. Conducted international clinical studies to identify risk factors, primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Annually, the results of major projects on the effectiveness of drugs and new technologies are published. In the 21st century, digital technologies are increasingly used in cardiology. The international conference will highlight various areas in cardiology, which will help in the practical work of specialists. I wish you fruitful work.

The coagulation disorder program is linked to referral care for thrombotic and bleeding disorders. The latter is further supported by the leading role of the section in the Thrombosis Expertise Center Leiden and in the Leiden Expert Center for Hemophilia and Allied Disorders and by participating in the European Reference Network on hematological diseases (EuroBloodNet). The Vascular Surgery program is linked to referral care for complex aneurysm repair and peripheral arterial disease treatment. The referral care topic for the cardiology program relate to a broad scala of top cardiac clinical care programs. The referral care topic for cardiac surgery is congenital heart disease, complex valve disease and heart failure. The LUMC as part of the Center for Congenital Heart Disease Amsterdam-Leiden (CAHAL), is an expertise center for congenital heart disease and part of the European Reference Network for rare cardiac diseases GuardHeart. Since three years the department of cardiothoracic surgery forms an interacademic institution with the department of cardiothoracic surgery of the Amsterdam UMC. In the near future research activities and referral topic will be joint.

The 2024 program follows the themes of structural heart disease, myocardial and pericardial disease, coronary artery disease, and interventional echocardiography. During the course, presentations will highlight what echo brings to each theme, help clinicians recognize and avoid common errors and pitfalls, and learn how to apply the guidelines in a practical manner.

Several cardiology societies have started hosting regular sessions on how to leverage social media to more effectively share key news, published studies and new guidelines in the various cardiac subspecialties. SCCT started a big social media effort in 2018, including the creation of the hashtag #YesCCT for information on cardiac CT in appropriate indications. In a year since its introduction, #YesCCT has had more than 2,200 users, 11,000 tweets and more than 30 million impressions, explained Andrew Choi, M.D., FACC, FSCCT, co-director, cardiac CT and MRI, assistant professor of medicine and radiology, George Washington University, Division of Cardiology, Washington, D.C., who spoke in several sessions about use of social media in cardiology. He said use of specific hashtags enables social media to be used as a sort of vast journal club, with users across the world.

Siemens showed its Go.Top Cardiovascular Edition CT scanner. It has a compact CT gantry so it can fit in small rooms and is aimed at cardiology office-based imaging. It was released this past spring at the American College of Cardiology (ACC) meeting. The system has removable tablets on each side of the scanner which the tech can use to adjust the machine, review scout scans and trigger the scanner. The idea is to improve workflow and allow the tech to remain with the patient at the bedside longer, rather than tucked away in a remote control room using an intercom.

SCCT has started partnering with other cardiology societies to host joint sessions aimed at specific subspecialties. It partnered with the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) for a session on CT imaging for electrophysiology. Another session held jointly with Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) was aimed at what interventional cardiologists need in CT imaging, especially in regards to structural heart planning for transcatheter valve implantations.
