Power Rangers Dino Thunder is the twelfth season of the television series, Power Rangers. This incarnation of Power Rangers was adapted from Bakury Sentai Abaranger, the 27th entry of Toei Company's long-running Super Sentai franchise.[1] Dino Thunder was also the subtitle of the Korean dub of Abaranger in South Korea and had a similar/identical logo to the American version as well. The series is notable as it features the return of Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver[2][3] as a main character and a dinosaur theme for the powers, abilities and assets from most of the series' protagonists and antagonists. It was the first series to be aired on ABC Family part of ABC.[4][5]

The Dino Rangers morph by drawing power from their respective Dino Gems, which Tommy grants Conner's, Ethan's and Kira's the ability to morph into Dino Morphers whenever needed (Morph call: "Dino Thunder, Power Up!"). They use their abilities to battle the villain Mesogog. By calling out "Super Dino Mode", the Power Rangers tap into the power of the dinosaurs, with spikes extending into view on their suits and, in the case of Kira, wings with Trent's own Super Dino Mode possessing an exclusive extra factor: bladed thin spikes extending from his hands. Each Dino Gems has a special power; red is speed; blue is armor; yellow is hyper screeching; black and white are similar, being invisibility and camouflage, which means Tommy and Trent both use stealth-themed powers with their Gems. In Power Rangers Dino Fury, the Dino Gems are revealed to be created by the Morphin Masters.[6][7]

Former Veteran Ranger Tommy Oliver takes a teaching job in Reefside years after escaping the evil and mysterious dinosauroid monster named Mesogog. He is assigned by Principal Randall to look after three detention students: Conner McKnight (soccer star), Ethan James (hi-tech prankster), and Kira Ford (singer). The trio stumbles upon a secret hideaway during a trip to the museum and finds the Dino Gems. Kira rejects her Gem, only to be abducted by Mesogog's forces. Kira then escapes from Mesogog's lair, and he reveals his powerful Bio Zords and unleashes them on the city. Tommy grants the students the means to become Power Rangers and sends them to tame the wild creatures. They succeed and combine their Zords into the Thundersaurus Megazord to halt the evil warrior Zeltrax's attack and save the day.

Former Power Ranger Tommy Oliver had focused his new career goals on being a paleontology and his friend Anton Mercer was working on Dino DNA projects. One of the projects exploded and changed Anton into a human/dinosaur hybird called Mesogogg. Tommy, and three of his student tapped into amazing powers using "dino gemes" that gave them the powers of the dinosaurs and made them the Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Anton's son Trent found a white Dino Gem and became the evil White Dino ranger, before he was freed from its evil influence and was able to use his powers for good to fight the evil creature his father had become. Along the way the Rangers would discover new teens with Dino Gems and Zords to enhance their team.

Dino Thunder Rangers In General Dino Thunder Rangers Animal-Motif Team: They are the second dinosaur-based team in the franchise. Contrasting Sequel Main Character: The main trio were high school students with no fighting skills or training before becoming Power Rangers, while the Wind Rangers had at least a year of training at the Ninja Academy before becoming Power Rangers. In addition, the Wind Rangers were already friends by the time the season began, while the main trio were not due to being in different cliques, leading to growing pains in the early episodes. They are also this to the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team. While the MMPR team where friends from the beginning the Dino Thunder team never interacted with each other until becoming Rangers. While the Mighty Morphin team were idealistic and heroic to a rather unrealistic degree, the Dino Thunder Rangers are more believably flawed. This is best displayed in "The Passion of Conner" in which Conner pretends to be into environmentalism to impress a girl he's attracted to. The original MMPR team where genuinely interested in environmentalism and other activities that benefited their community when they weren't being Rangers. Tommy and Trent are somewhat inversions of the Thunder Rangers and Cam. Tommy is a single Ranger while the Thunder Rangers were a duo. While the Thunder Rangers started out as antagonists, Tommy was a good guy throughout Dino Thunder (though he was also a villain for a time in Mighty Morphin). Cam was a sarcastic jerk who showed a nicer side as time went on while Trent is more sensitive and friendly. Both Cam and Trent have family members who serve as the Big Bad but Trent is the adopted son of Mesogog's human alter ego while Cam is the nephew of Lothar. Cam is present from the first episode while Trent doesn't show up til the third episode. Finally, Trent spent some time as a villain while Cam is a hero from start to finish. Personality Powers: Conner McKnight is an energetic soccer star and has Super-Speed. Kira Ford, an aspiring singer who's unafraid to speak her mind, has a powerful sonic scream. Trent is an artist, which involves the use of colors and can change color to blend in with his environment. Subverted with Ethan James a Teen Genius who has Instant Armor and Super-Strength, though he grows into it through his Character Development. Tommy Oliver is initially portrayed as mysterious and aloof to the teens. He has the power of Invisibility. Super Mode: Each Ranger can access Super Dino Mode, which causes spikes to grow out of the patterns on their suits. Three Plus Two: As with the Ninja Storm Rangers from the previous season, the Dino Thunder Rangers start off as a trio. As the season progresses, they are quickly joined by Tommy as the Black Ranger and, later during the season, Trent as the White Ranger. Unlike the Wind Rangers, however, they never go past five, so the final arrangement is Three Plus One Plus One. Transformation Trinket: All the Morphers are wrist-mounted, and when not in use, they turn into Dino Wristbands that leave only the Dino Gems present. The core three morph using the Dino Morphers, which can also summon the Dino Zords. The Black Ranger uses the Brachio Morpher to morph. In a nod to Tommy's last Ranger form, he uses a special key to initiate the morph. The White Ranger uses the Drago Morpher to morph. note In Abaranger, there was a pull back mechanism that had to be used as part of the morphing sequence, but Trent never used it in Power Rangers.

A gamer and hacker, Ethan was given detention after tampering with the school's sprinkler system. During detention, Ethan, along with Conner and Kira, found the Dino Gems in Dr. Oliver's lab. He bonded with the Blue Dino Gem and became the Blue Ranger with the power of the Triceratops. The gem also granted him durable skin when unmorphed. Adaptational Nice Guy: His Abaranger counterpart, Yukito, was much more aloof and cold; even trying to walk away from his duties as an Abaranger, these traits were given over to Connor. Badass Bookworm: He's a tad smarter when it comes to technology than his two teammates. Black and Nerdy: He's an avid gamer and techno-geek. Blue Means Smart One: Ethan is the Blue Ranger, and a hacker genius and techno-geek. He naturally plays The Smart Guy of his team. Characterization Marches On: The first episode of Dino Thunder shows Ethan as something of a prankster with him hacking the school computer system to set off the sprinklers. This is actually why he was in detention in the first place. After the episode, this aspect of the character is dropped though he still remains a computer nerd and lover of geek pop culture. Cool Bike: A hovercraft one. Deadpan Snarker: Something that separates him from the previous blue ranger with the dinosaur theme, Billy Cranston. Billy was socially withdrawn while Ethan isn't afraid to make some quips about others. Expy: Of Billy. Both of them are nerdy Blue Rangers with Triceratops-themed Zords. Somewhat subverted as Ethan is a little more assertive towards others than Billy from the beginning. Genius Bruiser: Since his civilian powers involve super-strength... Genre Savvy: Being the big sci-fi nerd he is, he's seen enough movies to know that it's never "just the wind", and that telling people about your super-powers is a good way to wind up with wires in your head. Instant Armor: His civilian powers allow him to grow scale-like skin that he can use for protection. The Lancer: Towards Conner as he is calmer and logical compared to his friend who is reckless and not that bright. Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: His weapon is a Tricera Shield. Meaningful Name: "Ethan" means "strong", "firm", or "safe" in Hebrew. The Smart Guy: He's the tech expert of the main trio. The Spock: Speaks in technobabble and tends to use his head more often. Super-Strength: Part of his civilian power. Tempting Fate: Lampshaded and invoked. Two First Names: Ethan and James are pretty common first names.

An upcoming singer and songwriter, Kira was given detention after playing her guitar on school grounds. During detention, Kira, along with Conner and Ethan, found the Dino Gems in Dr. Oliver's lab. She bonded with the Yellow Dino Gem, and became the Yellow Ranger with the power of the Pteranodon. The gem also granted her a high pitch scream when unmorphed. Action Girl: She's probably one of the toughest female rangers to date, despite The Smurfette Principle. Berserk Button: She was not happy about being a MOTW's mind-controlled puppet once Hayley snaps her out of the spell."Nobody messes with my mind and gets away with it!" She's not fond of people calling her "babe". Brainwashed and Crazy: In the episode "The Missing Bone", the MOTW's disembodied skull zaps Kira with its mind control powers and subsequently uses her to reconstruct the rest of its body so it can engage the other rangers in a proper battle. Character Development: A subtle one. At the beginning, she was pretty used to seeing people in the way they look like (as the seemingly snobbish Cassidy). But Kira learns to look beyond people's stereotypes, and realize that despite their flaws, they can be friends. Cute Bruiser: She's a bashful girl who styles herself nicely and enjoys playing the guitar but she can wipe the floor with most opponents. Dual Wielding: Wields two Ptera Grips. Goth: Downplayed as the Power Rangers' incarnation of Avril Lavigne. Expy: Of Black Canary. Idol Singer: Her dream is to be a professional singer. Light Feminine Dark Feminine: the pseudo-goth dark feminine to Cassidy's light The Kirk: Balances Conner's impulsiveness and Ethan's intellect. Only Sane Man: Compared to her two other teammates, she's the most reasonable and more down-to-earth than them. She also tends to be the least reckless one and usually stays out of any conflicts between Connor and/or Ethan/Trent. Ship Tease: Has some of this with Trent. Shorttank: Her sense of style edges on Tomboy and is partnered with a no-nonsense attitude. The Smurfette Principle: Even after two Sixth Rangers joined the team, she still is the only female member. Super-Scream: Her civilian power. 006ab0faaa
