I used my CNZ Kava new leaders grant to begin research in Los Angeles across the road from my work office at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) the most influential piece of art from my research was 'La Gerbe' by Henri Matisse a large scale installation made from ceramic tiles cast in plaster. A permanent, colourful work inspired by his paper cutouts, that were inspired by Tifaifai Matisse saw during his time in Tahiti. Challenging the materials of traditional tivaevae in order to overcome it's impermanence and delicacy, I designed a site-specific installation with Michael Tavioni as a way to brighten and inspire visitors to his new local gallery in Rarotonga. Made at the end of 2019, in time for 2020 to begin and align with the title of a poem he published over 30 something years ago titled 'Native of 2020'. For the design I utilised the Tivaevae Taorei technique (multiple squares combined to form an image) and used the akairo (motifs) from Michael Tavioni's recently published book 'Nukutere: Cook Islands motifs'. As part of the installation project, I held local workshops for interested participants to come and learn more about the technique and contribute to the final piece by having a go at painting portions of the mural. The combined effort included the help of over a dozen volunteers both local and visitors to Rarotonga.
